A rare $400 million Russian early warning and control aircraft and an Ilyushin plane were hit by Russia's own air defenses over the Azov Sea.
Multiple Russian Telegram channels reported that Moscow lost a Beriev A-50 Shmel, NATO reporting name, Mainstay, in a case of friendly fire. It was also reported that an Ilyushin Il-22M airborne command postwas damaged.
The Rybar Telegram channel, which has links to Russia's Defense Ministry, said the aircraft could have been struck in "friendly fire" from Russian air defense.
Illia Ponomarenko, a Ukrainian journalist, said on X that if confirmed, it would mark "the biggest Ukrainian air victory of this war so far."
The Rybar Telegram channel says that there are not many A-50s. “And the specialists on them are generally unique. If an aircraft of this type is hit, the crew will not be able to escape. The option of “friendly fire” from the Russian air defense is not at all theoretically impossible: unfortunately, for two years there were enough such cases, but there was no tendency to correct it at all”, the channel added.
İt is noted that the following questions arise regarding this whole situation: Why is the broadcast of the pilots of the surviving IL-22 open and written by everyone who is not too lazy? Why do Ukrainian formations still almost instantly learn information about any casualties of the Russian Armed Forces? If this was the work of Ukrainian air defense, then where were the launchers driven, so that the Azov Sea was in the affected area?", the channel added.
Russian military correspondent Yuri Kotenok wrote that Russian air defense systems are not working normally.
It was noted that this is not the first case of Russian aircraft being shot down by its own anti-missile systems. Russian military correspondents wrote that a plane was shot down on October 6, 2023. British intelligence also wrote that on September 28, 2023, the Su-35S aircraft was shot down by Russian air defense systems in the Tokmak region.
The "Rybar" channel said that poor communication and a broken recognition system led to the "accounting" of the Russian air defense systems for the Su-34, Su-35S and Su-30SM aircraft, as well as the Ka-52 helicopters, which have been lost since the spring.
Another Russian Telegram channel "Voenniy osvedomitel" reports that Russian planes are often attacked in the rear.
