People sleep in lots of different ways. Some are night owls. Some are early birds. Some are even sleepwalkers, but until recently, I only knew of one sleep fighter, Demon Slayer’s Zenitsu. Zenitsu is an easily frightened demon slayer with a powerful secret. When he sleeps, his inhibitions fade away and he becomes so lighting-fast he can draw, swing, and resheath his sword before a demon’s head even hits the ground. A snoring Zenitsu is the last thing many unlucky demons see before they die. We think of our minds as being turned off during sleep, but in truth, our brains do quite a lot while we snooze. So could someone master Zenitsu’s art of sleep fighting in real life?

Sleepwalking, or somnambulism, is a phenomenon where a person sits up, walks around, or performs other wakeful activities while asleep. Sleepwalkers can be thought of as only partially asleep. Some people even sleepwalk with their eyes open. Sleepwalking can be caused by sleep deprivation, breathing disorders, certain medications, migraines, fevers, and stress. About 6.9% of people experience sleepwalking at some point in their lives, most likely during childhood. Evidence suggests that sleepwalkers possess better proprioception, or awareness of their movements, when they’re awake then non-sleepwalkers.
