Robert E. Lee, born in 1807, is best known as the Confederate General who led the Army of Northern Virginia during the U.S. Civil War. He was a skilled military tactician and strategist, commanding forces in several key battles, including the Battle of Gettysburg. Despite his military prowess, Lee ultimately surrendered to Union General Ulysses S. Grant at Appomattox Court House in 1865, effectively ending the Civil War. Following the war, he became a symbol of the Lost Cause ideology in the South and advocated for national reconciliation. Lee passed away in 1870, leaving a complicated legacy as a revered figure in the South and a controversial figure in American history.
