N'giri - Land of the water people (1947)
In this film by director Gérard De Boe, the contrast between the two Congos, one urban and the other wilderness, is compellingly highlighted. The marshy area of N'Giri in Equatorial Congo serves as a symbol for the wilderness and is central to the film, depicting the profound gap between urban and rural environments. The film takes a look at the efforts of Europeans to bring about change in these environments and illuminates the complexity of the interaction between different cultures and traditions. Additionally, the film emphasizes the humanitarian achievements of the Belgians and showcases the positive reception of their efforts by the primitive populations. By exploring these themes, the film provides ample opportunity for deep reflection on the impact of colonialism, modernization, and cultural exchange.
