HBO has released two trailers for Season 2 of House of the Dragon, the Game of Thrones spinoff series that wrapped its first season way back in October 2022, with Queen Rhaenyra Targaryen — fire in her eyes — making a decision to fight for the Iron Throne.

The new season is set to debut June 16, the network said today.

The new trailers ask fans to pick a side in the ongoing civil war between Green and Black Councils that are fighting for King Aegon and Queen Rhaenyra, respectively. As each side believes theirs to be the rightful seat on the Iron Throne, the Green and Black trailers reflect those two perspectives in separate yet complementary halves of the same story.

Season 1 of House of the Dragon picked up eight Emmy nominations including Outstanding Drama Series (winning for its costumes) as it set up the story of House Targaryen almost 200 years before the events of GoT. By the end, the family after the death of King Viserys I (Paddy Considine) had been cleaved in two, with one faction led by Viserys’ wife Alicent (Cooke) and her son Aegon (Glynn-Carney) and the other behind his daughter — and original heir — Rhaenyra (D’Arcy) and her husband Prince Daemon (Smith).

That look from Rhaenyra in the Season 1 finale in the war-planning room after hearing of the death of one of her sons at the hands of one of Alicent’s surely means war: Based on George R.R. Martin’s “Fire & Blood” books, up next after alliances are secured is the Dance of the Dragons, the civil war that will wreck havoc on the realm.

Since the Season 1 finale, HBO has been busy with the franchise, ordering a second prequel A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms: The Hedge Knight, which is set between the times of House of the Dragon and GoT. The logline: A century before the events of Game of Thrones, two unlikely heroes wandered Westeros… a young, naïve but courageous knight, Ser Duncan the Tall, and his diminutive squire, Egg. Set in an age when the Targaryen line still holds the Iron Throne and the memory of the last dragon has not yet passed from living memory, great destinies, powerful foes, and dangerous exploits all await these improbable and incomparable friends.

It is expected to premiere in late 2025, HBO brass says.
