Man, teen killed after car crashes into east Las Vegas bus stop

Las Vegas police are investigating a crash that killed at least two people in the east valley on Wednesday night.

According to the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department, the crash happened on Boulder Highway, south of Dalhart Street around 7:37 p.m. Police determined that a 2014 KIA Rio was traveling northbound on Boulder Highway at a high speed, while several pedestrians were waiting for a bus at a nearby RTC shelter.

The crash occurred when the KIA left the roadway and struck several fixed objects that it carried into the shelter, striking several pedestrians and projecting them onto the roadway.

Three pedestrians were transported to UMC Trauma Center by ambulance for injuries they sustained from the crash. One sustained life-threatening injuries, and the other two sustained serious injuries.

Two additional pedestrians – identified as a 42-year-old man and a 14-year-old teen – were pronounced dead at the scene.The driver of the KIA – identified as 64-year-old Cynthia Phelps – displayed signs of impairment following the crash, and was taken into custody on DUI-related charges. Police say she was also treated for minor injuries.

“The pedestrian deaths marked the 49th and 50th traffic-related fatalities in the LVMPD’s jurisdiction for 2024,” LVMPD noted in a release. “This case remains under investigation by the LVMPD’s Collision Investigation Section.”
