A hero toddler saved the lives of his mum and his baby sister by sounding the alarm to a house fire but unfortunately died after running back through the flames to hide in his bedroom in fear.

Heartbroken mother Whitney Johnson, 26, says that she had fallen asleep on the sofa with her DJ, two, and daughter five-week-old Nyla when a heater exploded and sparked flames. An electrical fault in the device triggered an explosion and started a fire in their apartment in Frankfort, Kentucky, USA the tragic night on November 20, 2015.

Apparently, the smoke detector in their apartment malfunctionед, but hero DJ happened to wake up and save the day. He immediately shouted his mother’s name, upon which Whitney rushed to get her children out of the building as quickly as possible. The HR worker grabbed her son’s hand and picked up baby Nyla before running through roaring flames to the front door in an attempt to escape.

She was forced to let go of DJ’s hand for a split second in order to turn the key in the lock, and at that moment the frightened toddler raced back to his bedroom to hide. Unfortunately, Whitney was unable to find the crying tot in the smoke and fire and was forced to leave him behind and save baby Nyla, whose scalp was melting. Her devastating decision saved their lives!

After saving her daughter from the fire she immediately went back to the apartment, but couldn’t reach to DJ. Her hero son died from smoke inhalation after climbing into his bed.

She says: ‘DJ is my hero. If it wasn't for him yelling for me, we definitely would not be here’.

Whitney and Nyla suffered burns but recovered after spending two months in the hospital. They still bear the scars which remind them of that horrific night. Unfortunately, her daughter has been referred to as ‘baby Freddy Krueger’ by cruel strangers, some of which even blame her for not saving her son!
