Canada Re-Criminalizes Public Drug Use

The federal government has agreed to B.C.’s request to reinstate a ban on the public use of illicit drugs, according to Mental Health and Addictions Minister Ya’ara Saks.Show more

Saks emphasized that the focus should be on treating addiction as a health crisis rather than a criminal issue, while also ensuring community safety.

B.C. had previously implemented a three-year exemption for personal drug possession and public use to encourage individuals to seek help without fear of prosecution.

However, concerns about public safety prompted B.C. Premier David Eby to request the ban’s reinstatement, supported by Public Safety Minister Mike Farnworth.

Police now have the authority to intervene in public drug use situations, including removing individuals from the area, seizing drugs, or making arrests if necessary, Global News reported.
