The symbolism of the Mouse

There are over 519 species of mice and this subfamily is larger than all mammal families. Mice are found worldwide and have been around 14 million years. Mice can feel pleasure, disgust, nausea, pain, and fear. They have poor eyesight, a keen sense of hearing and well developed sense of smell. The house mouse (Mus musculus) is one of the most abundant species. Although a wild animal, the house mouse has been domesticated as the pet mouse, and is used as the laboratory mouse. We also have the Dormouse, the Harvest Mouse and the Field or wood mouse. What marks mice out is how tiny and light they are. One would think that a little creature of this size would symbolically represent fear and caution. But they don't. And we will explore all the different forms of courage mice display and why the dormouse has its own symbolism.
