The symbolism of the Squirrel

The northern hemisphere has three types of squirrel with significant symbolism - the Grey squirrel, the Red squirrel and the Black squirrel. The UK, for example has all three. In general , the squirrel is associated with Hermes and Mercury, the messenger of the gods, because it is able to reach every single branch and leaf on the Tree of Life. This video takes a look at each type of squirrel and provides information that may help to dispel a few myths. Is it true that squirrels eat eggs? Do they damage trees? Do they like truffles? Is is true they carry disease - diseases such as Typhus, Plague and Lyme’s disease? And why has the grey squirrel almost entirely displaced native red squirrels in the UK? It is not as simple as you might think. And did you know that there are around 25,000 black squirrels in the UK. And in the end these may replace all the squirrels in the UK. The Red squirrel is probably the most agile of all the squirrels and the one found in the Poetic Edda is called Ratatosk. We also explore the role of this very specific squirrel as he acts as a messenger between the king of the gods and "the lands of men".
