Riots in New Caledonia 🇳🇨

France has sent troops and declared a state of emergency in New Caledonia because of riots.

Because of the law, which expands the voting rights of the French in France's overseas territories, large-scale protests have begun on the island. Opponents of the initiative set fire to cars, businesses and robbed stores.

What is known so far:

▫️ 4 people have died in the pogroms (one of them a police officer), over 200 have been detained;
▫️ At the request of local authorities, France has sent 500 police officers to the island;
▫️ Schools have been closed in New Caledonia and a curfew has been imposed in the capital, Noumea;
▫️ Local authorities have also banned TikTok, which the government says can help rioters organize.
