Following the 2022 summer blockbuster phenomenon of Illumination's Minions: The Rise of Gru, which earned almost $1B worldwide, the biggest global animated franchise in history now begins a new chapter as Gru (Steve Carrell) and Lucy (Kristen Wiig) and their girls —Margo, Edith and Agnes — welcome a new member to the Gru family, Gru Jr., who's intent on tormenting his dad. They face a new nemesis with Maxime Le Mal and his femme fatale girlfriend Valentina, as they're forced to go on the run. Despicable Me 4 is directed by animation filmmaker / Minions co-creator Chris Renaud, director of Despicable Me, The Lorax, Despicable Me 2, and the two The Secret Life of Pets movies most recently. It's co-directed by Patrick Delage. The screenplay is written by Mike White (School of Rock, "White Lotus") and Ken Daurio. Produced by Illumination's Christopher Meledandri, and Brett Hoffman. Made by Illumination Animation based in Santa Monica. Universal will debut Illumination's Despicable Me 4 sequel in theaters everywhere starting on July 3rd, 2024 coming up this summer movie season. Who's planning to go watch this movie?
New trailer for Despicable Me 4 reveals Gru on the run from supervillains.
The main villains are Maxime Le Mal and Valentina, and Gru's team creates "Mega-Minions" in response
The sequel is poised for success, leaning into the popular Minions element, similar to past box office hits.
A new Despicable Me 4 trailer is here. The upcoming movie is the latest entry in the highly successful Illumination franchise that began in 2010. While the prequel Minions: The Rise of Gru came out in 2022, it's been seven years since the release of the most recent movie in the main Despicable Me franchise. Despicable Me 4 will find Gru and his family on the run as they're pursued by a supervillain.

Now, Illumination has released a brand-new trailer for the upcoming Despicable Me 4 ahead of its release this summer.

The trailer begins with a cubicle-style office that is filled with Minions in business attire. The scene then cuts to the statement that “Gru has been compromised!” Gru’s wife Lucy is later seen racing through the supermarket with Agnes and Edith, running from a villain. The main villains of the next installment are then revealed to be Maxime Le Mal and his girlfriend, Valentina. To combat these conniving antagonists, Gru’s team hatches a plan to transform the minions into “Mega-Minions.” These scientifically-altered Minions will be used as the “secret weapon” against Gru’s enemies.

Will Despicable Me 4 Continue the Series' Huge Success?
Every Despicable Me Movie Has Been A Hit
The Despicable Me 4 trailer offers everything audiences want in a Despicable Me movie. The trailer is replete with Minions and action, but it also has the slower moments that give these films heart. This includes showing Gru’s paternal side, as he cares for Agnes and Edith. He still has his characteristic “bad guy” humor, as he encourages Agnes to be more like her older sister, Edith, by lying more often.

This sequel follows a series of huge financial successes for the Despicable Me franchise. The most recent entry, Minions: The Rise of Gru raked in nearly $1 billion at the worldwide box office, taking home $940.2 million. Despicable Me 4’s direct predecessor, Despicable Me 3 did manage to cross that coveted $1 billion mark, taking home $1.03 billion worldwide.

While this puts pressure on Despicable Me 4 to perform, the animated film seems well-positioned to do so. The story is strategically wise in that it appears to be leaning into one of the series’ most popular elements: the Minions. Minions: The Rise of Gru spurred massive social media trends upon its release, with audience members bringing bananas to theaters and wearing fancy outfits. The Minions in the Despicable Me 4 trailer sport tuxes at one point, which could lead to similar theater trends. With these elements and hype, Despicable Me 4 is poised to become a summer hit.

Despicable Me 4 is set for release in theaters on July 3.
Gru and the Minions are back, as Universal and Illumination’s “Despicable Me 4” has released its first trailer.

The film, which hits theaters on July 3, 2024, continues the popular animated franchise, which follows the reformed supervillain Gru (Steve Carell) trying to do good and finding family while he’s at it. Kristen Wiig, Miranda Cosgrove, Steve Coogan, Chris Renaud, Dana Gaier and Pierre Coffin also return for the fourth installment.

“Despicable Me 4” introduces new characters voiced by Will Ferrell, Joey King, Sofia Vergara, Stephen Colbert, Chloe Fineman and Madison Polan. Ferrell voices Gru’s new nemesis Maxime Le Mal, while Vergara plays Maxime’s femme fatale girlfriend Valentina.

The first movie featured Gru adopting three daughters, while the second installment saw Gru finding love with Lucy Wilde (voiced by Wiig). “Despicable Me 3” had a shocking reveal with the appearance of Gru’s long-lost twin brother, Dru (also voiced by Carell). In the fourth film, Gru and Lucy welcome a new addition to the family: their son, Gru Jr.

In 2017, “Despicable Me 3” was a rousing box office success, crossing the $1 billion milestone worldwide and exceeding the “Shrek” series as highest-grossing animated film franchise. Part of the franchise’s success can likely be attributed to its most iconic and memorable characters, the Minionese-speaking yellow Minions. These lovable Minions serve as Gru’s “sidekicks” but, in keeping with demand, have since gone on to star in their own spinoff films, “Minions” and “Minions: The Rise of Gru.”

“On the surface, the ‘Despicable Me’ cartoons appear to be sendups of the James Bond franchise, but beneath that slick, spoofy exterior, they’re really marshmallow-centered affirmations of good old-fashioned family values,” Peter Debruge wrote in his review of “Despicable Me 3” for Variety.

Illumination co-founder Chris Meledandri produces. “Despicable Me” and “Despicable Me 2” director Chris Renaud co-directs with Patrick Delage, and Mike White serves as writer.

The Despicable Me franchise follows Gru, a reformed struggling supervillain, as he becomes a reluctant father of three, a husband as well as a secret agent, and eventually teams up with his long-lost brother, Dru, to fight against an unreformed super villain together. The original movie was released in 2010 and gained a huge fan following that has lasted twelve years thanks in part to internet memes.

Arguably, the most recognizable characters of the series are the loud and chaotic yellow tic tacs, otherwise known as Minions, who have existed since the beginning of time to serve evil geniuses such as Gru. They have received two spin-off movies of their own, including a film about their origin story and a sequel which explains how they wind up in the service of Gru, as well as how Gru begins his journey to become the supervillain he longs to be, as mentioned before regarding Minions: The Rise of Gru - you never really can escape the loud little sidekicks.

Since its release, the movie series has spawned spin-offs, including several video games and a theme park attraction. The franchise has gone on to become the highest-grossing animated franchise of all time, having grossed over billions of dollars globally. It will be interesting to see what Illumination and Universal have in store for the series going forward.

Steve Coogan is also part of the film's voice cast. There were rumors that the Despicable Me 4 would play during the Super Bowl on February 11th, but instead, it ran during Sunday's NFL playoff game. You can watch the Despicable Me 4 trailer below.
