Silly Horse Tries To Get Icicles Off Of Whiskers
Have you ever seen how much fun an inexperienced horse looks in the snow? Then look at it right now! It is often difficult for horses to get used to the snow when they come from a warmer place, for that reason, they generally make funny faces in their attempt to adapt. This hair seems a bit silly, since it does very funny things to try to remove the icicles from the whiskers, obviously this horse is not accustomed to snow, it seems something really new to him. Seeing that the horse is a little crazy, its owner takes advantage of the filming of the fun moment and then it will help and reassure him. Not everyone likes snow!
Horses tolerate cold better than heat, provided they have enough food. In winter, the horse uses much of the energy consumed to maintain body temperature. In the withdrawal from Russia, the horses of Napoleon's troops perfectly resisted temperatures above thirty degrees below zero, while they had their ration. Snow is problematic for the horse, not so much because of the cold, but because of the difficulties caused by obtaining food. Although the feet are buried in the snow, the horse's helmet does not freeze, due to a particular circulatory system that has bridges between the arterial and venous capillaries that, when opened, allow rapid blood circulation inside the helmet, heating it.
On the other hand, snow and ice are deposited on a thick and greasy layer of winter hair, which preserves body heat. The main problem with snow is that the helmets are caked and embossed. Whether injured or not, the dreaded boots or heels form and produce a very unstable footprint, causing sprains in the collateral ligaments of the foot. The steep slopes of the mountains of northern Spain cause horses to slide and crumble.
In general, free horses descend to lower altitudes as winter progresses and food decreases at heights. When a snowfall surprises them and isolates them, they usually stand still in the same place, digging into the ground to get anything. If they are next to a tree, they gnaw the bark and even eat the mane between them. Winter can be cruel to animals that live free in the bush and only the strongest survive.
Even if you want and it is attractive, it is better not to go riding when it is snowing. If it is essential or, despite being contraindicated, you want to use the horse in the snowy terrain, there are some palliative solutions to the problems described. The simplest is to grease the helmets well, so that the snow slips and does not deposit. Even more dangerous than snow are ice sheets. Ice becomes a real danger for the horse's back and joints, especially for hocks. In countries of hard winters they are placed in horseshoes to help the horse to walk better. This video shows that not all horses love snow, it seems that some like heat more than cold. This horse is very funny!
