Native to Europe and Asia, this fish has been introduced into other environments around the world. It can grow to a maximum length of about 1.2 meters (4 ft) and weigh up to 37.3 kg (82.2 pounds) as well as the highest recorded life span of 47 years. Wild-living breeds tend to be smaller and lighter between 20 and 33% of their maximum sizes and weights. Koi (錦鯉 in Japanese, 鯉魚 (pinyin: lĭ yú -lư fishery) in Chinese) are cultured for ornamental fish originating from China but known to the Western world through the Japanese path. In some localities in Vietnam, common carp is also called cobia.
