Elephants are herbivorous animals, and most of the day, for 16-20 hours, they are looking for something to eat, or feed. Plants are poorly digested, so huge elephants have to eat huge amounts of grass, leaves, roots and fruits.
During the day, an adult elephant eats 150-300 kilograms of various vegetation. The herd quickly destroys all the grass around it, so it usually does not stay in one place for more than a few days. Elephants try not to go far from water sources, because they drink up to 200 liters of water a day.
But if the source is not nearby, the animals are able to find water underground: they dig up dried-up streambeds, getting to the ground water. The remaining "wells" after the elephants are used by other animals.
