Greetings,
Today I am going to show how you can control the rear camera of your smart phone to record a talking head video. I will provide three tips in order of simplicity. Stay tuned till the end to get the best tip to reap the maximum benefit from your phone camera.
Hi, I am Dr. A.K.Venkatachalam, an orthopaedic surgeon in Chennai, India. You can learn about my professional interests from my website www.drakvenkat.com During these days of the pandemic, I have been focused on offering tips to content creators like you. You can find these tips on my YouTube channel Madras joint replacement centre MJRC
The reason why you should do this is that in many older phones, the resolution of the rear camera is superior to that of the front camera. If you prefer the front camera for convenience or for having sufficient resolution for your purpose, then this video is not for you. Again if you have a phone with a camera that can be rotated, this is not meant for you.
What is a talking head video?
A talking head video is one in which you appear to be talking directly to an audience. It is one in which your head and upper body and hands are visible on the video so that you can address and convey your thoughts to an audience.
As it is very obvious. It is very easy to do with the front facing camera. All you have to do is to mount your phone on a tripod or support it somehow at a reasonable distance in front of you and talk to the phone. But if you are filming all by yourself, controlling the rear camera for framing, on & off will be difficult. You may appear to be partly or fully decapitated, your hands may not be in the frame or the sound quality may be poor. You will have to persevere and repeat your efforts to get it partially or fully right and you are bound to get frustrated in the process.
So, the three tips which I am going to show you will hopefully be of great help. I will begin from the very basics. First you will need a phone holder to grasp your phone and mount it on a tripod. It is always advisable to use an external audio input so that even while standing a few feet away from the phone, your audio input will be good. I am using a lapel mic now.
In the first method, mount your phone with the front facing camera in front of you at a measured distance, then mark your position and the tripod’s position with chalk if you are standing. If you are sitting and doing this on a table, then this might not be necessary. Record some test footage to check for framing and composition with the front camera. Use the grid to check for framing according to your preference. It is better to follow the rules of thirds in both the horizontal and vertical planes. If you are satisfied, flip the camera around in the phone holder, come back to the exact same place and press then flip the phone so that the rear facing camera is now facing you, press the record button come back to your original position and start speaking and record again. If you have blue tooth remote control like this you could use it or you can trigger recording with a voice command. There will be some uncertainty in this method to overcome which, the next tip will be help. You could mount a mirror ahead of your phone on which you could view your phone screen.

The next method is to use a mirror in front of the
These are very easy steps and don't involve any advanced knowledge or the necessity to purchase apps. They can be done with any phone whether it is an Android phone or an iPhone.
From the next method onwards, you will need screen mirroring or other apps. Some of these are free.
I will show you one method for all phones First let me begin with the general method available for all phones. It involves a paid app on the App Store. I have I am using AirDroid in which I can install AirDroid on two phones and view the camera of the recording phone from another phone using AirDroid mirror app on the Monitor phone. Purchase this app and install it on two devices which could be phones or tablets. Get the sister app called Airdroid mirror on the second device ir monitoring device and use this to control the recording device. Although you will get access to the camera, I couldn’t get access to specific camera settings. But it is useful to control your recording phone remotely via wireless. You can keep the monitoring phone in your palm and look at it and see what the recording phone is doing.
The next method is to use a paid camera app. I am talking about a paid camera app called Filmic Pro fir both android and IOS devices. It costs 15 dollars and is excellent to get manual control over your phone camera. You will also need to purchase another sister app called Filnic Pro remote. I have already uploaded a video on how to use this app and you can refer to this in the link above.
This should be good enough for many YouTubers if you you don't want to record higher than 4K. But some people may want more and they would like to use the 8 K recording in some Samsung phones like the 20 series and Note 20 ultra. Till date, filmic Pro app does not allow 8K recording.
The Samsung flow app comes pre loaded in the latest phones and is also available for Windows computers. So you could use either use computers or other Samsung devices for this app.
You have to install the app in both the phones on your recording phone, which is the latest and which is got 8K recording and also in your monitoring phone, which will ultimately control the recording phone. With his app, you will be able to go into the native camera app and pick any recording mode like the standard video, live focus recording or Pro camera app You can choose any camera setting including 8K. You can also choose use any microphone remotely if it has been connected to your recording device
All the above methods are done wirelessly.

So this Samsung flow app is the best method in my knowledge for controlling high-quality recording from the rear camera. If you know of any other method, mention it in the comments.
There are methods available for iPhones and iPads also and that will be the topic of another video.
