WOULD YOU LIKE TO KNOW SOME TRICKS TO SURVIVE IN PRISON?
Based on Piper Kerman's experiences in prison, "Orange Is the New Black" features quite a few tricks for inmates, such as using maxi pads to clean your cell, as makeshift slippers or as a surgical mask.
Some of the more interesting tricks are related to beauty (and saved, perhaps, for those prison visits): use Kool-Aid as a temporary hair dye or, mixed with Vaseline, as lipstick; coffee as an eyeshadow or a face mask; rolls of toilet paper as hair rollers; colored pencils as eyeliner (yikes!).
Based on past experiences of inmates, you can make toast in prison by wrapping a slice of bread in paper and sticking it in hot pipes for five minutes. You can also turn toilet paper into a type of oven:
The paper is rolled into a cylinder, folded at the ends, and lit to burn from the inside out. That slows it down and intensifies the heat. The inmates keep their undercooked food above the flame, and voila, you can leave it as hot and crisp as you like.
Make everything taste better
Speaking of food, clever prison recipes and cooking tricks probably make up a full stand of their own. When I asked people on Twitter that your tricks were learned from jail, many answered yes.
Here are some tips:
Replace the water with apple juice when you cook the rice, it adds flavor, and it's quick, affordable, and easy.
Microwave a cake using crumbled Oreo cookies and milk using a cup or small container.
You can make instant pasta in a plastic bag by filling it with hot water and wrapping it in a towel for a few minutes.
Instant noodles and Mini bags of Cheetos. These are used to make what people call prison burritos. Essentially eat half the bag of Cheetos, squash the rest of them in the bag, add half the package of Ramen noodles and some hot water to the bag of cheetos, shake it, fold it well. Let it sit for 5-7 minutes. When you open the bag you have a small burrito-shaped Cheeto burrito. People did this because you don't have bowls in jail. Interestingly, it is a bit delicious if Ramen is part of your life and you need a change of flavors.
All of this could be useful for dorm residents and those with very low food funds or just plain lazy. Enjoy!
