Advancing Australia 006: Aboriginal Deaths in Custody: Murder, Myth or Mayhem?

Recent deaths this month have highlighted activist action with regard to Aboriginal Deaths in Custody. In July 2020 large protests occurred in Australia’s capital cities with Aboriginal activists staging rallies to protest Aboriginal deaths in custody and the death of David Dungay in 2015 and more broadly the 432 claimed “deaths in custody” that have occurred since a Royal Commission handed down its report in 1991. Marching with signs proclaiming “No Justice, No Peace” and “I can’t breathe” the protestors and their media allies have portrayed every death in gaol, or during an act of arrest, as an injustice. We will examine in detail the numbers, the facts and the propaganda to understand what is behind the phenomenon of aboriginal criminals that die whilst incarcerated for their crimes, and who the victims of those crimes are.

Have police or corrective service officers been convicted of murder on a wide scale, do the coroners reports on these deaths match the narratives or are these media myths designed to create mayhem?
