The animal wandered into the chimp enclosure at the Saint Louis Zoo last week. Zoo visitor Adam Brucker captured the entire episode on his cell phone.

The chimps chased the raccoon down and tossed it around, even throwing it through the air. They intercepted the animal as it tried to escape through a hole in the wall, then really gave it a beating.

But... while you don't see it on the video... the raccoon does survive this tormenting encounter with the chimps. And eventually makes his escape.
Zoos showcase the beauty of the animal kingdom ... as well as its harshness.

A raccoon at the St. Louis Zoo could not escape from the aggressive chimpanzees after it got into their enclosure. Visitors recorded the chimps as they harassed the stranger, knocking the raccoon around and sending it flying.

The chimps initially gathered around the helpless raccoon and pursued it closely as it tried to sneak away.
They're hunting," one mother explained to her child. "You know how daddy hunts deer?" Then the educational moment turned into a spectacle.

The raccoon made a run for it across a large rock and almost evaded the grasp of the primates. But one chimpanzee grabbed its tail and flung it clear across the exhibit.

Then the raccoon tried to escape through a drain pipe, but another chimp caught it by the tail.
"That's probably how he got in," someone suggested about the drain pipe, in which the raccoon's head was lodged. Another chimpanzee started hitting the raccoon while it was in its vulnerable position.

"Poor thing! Let it go! Let it go!" one spectator said. But not everyone shared her empathy. Some found humor in the raccoon's struggle.
"Cheap shots!" one person said laughingly as the chimpanzees continued to strike the raccoon.
One month ago we showed you this video of a few gorillas staring in awe as a caterpillar made its way around the door to their enclosure.

And now, a new group of primates is going viral after a strange interaction with another animal at the zoo.

On a recent afternoon, an unfortunate raccoon found its way into the chimpanzee area at the St. Louis Zoo. The chimpanzees were not sure what to make of their visitor, so they tormented the raccoon before letting it escape. That punishment included tossing the poor animal across the cage and poking its underbelly repeatedly.
