just-in-time learning

If you're into online business, marketing, and creative work, then odds are you might be a big reader too.

But how do you navigate getting caught up in reading book after book without actually taking any action? Like, it's easy to FEEL like you're productive when you've got the next "must read" book in your hands...but are you ACTUALLY making progress?

That can be a tough one. For me, I break it down into two parts: There's the learning, researching, and conceptually understanding phase, and then there's the actual hands-on work.

And I think the mistake people make...and I've made it too!...is spending too much time in the learning and researching phase and not enough time doing the hands-on dirty work.

Spending too much time reading, learning, and researching leads to information overwhelm, overthinking, and analysts paralysis.

Yet what's great about getting on to the hands-on dirty work is that very often you learn on the job -- you learn while doing...and get struck by clear distinctions and understandings about how things work...all the while continuing to do the work.

So what I try to do is spend 20% of my time reading, learning, researching, and thinking...and 80% of my time getting my hands dirty.

The trick is, what should you be spending that initial 20% of your time reading and learning about? For me, it's always the exact problem or issue that I'm struggling with or that I'm faced with right now...

...and that could be any number of things -- something specific about setting up an auto-responder email sequence...a question that remains unanswered about on-page SEO...or who knows what else.

So in your online business and your marketing, ask yourself: What's the biggest problem I'm facing right now? Then go at it -- find resources...books, courses, videos, blog posts...whatever...that can give you answers. Then, shortly after that, roll up your sleeves and start learning as you go!
