Lessons from the Amazon: In search of a sustainable future for forests and people.

The Amazon rainforest is home to part of the richest biodiversity in the world. It stores large amounts of carbon and regulates climate and rainfall over a wide area. But it is also home to more than 30 million people in nine South American countries, many of whom depend on the forest for their livelihood. CIFOR's research in the region aims to clarify how forests can be used in more sustainable ways and, at the same time, improve the lives of the poorest residents.
