Smart, sociable and clean – yes, that's right! – pigs are amazing animals, capable of learning complex tasks and communicating with each other in an elaborate way. Get to know some amazing facts about them:

1. Pigs are our long-time partners Pigs are one of the oldest species of farm animals. They were domesticated by man even before cows, about six thousand years ago. There are currently a billion pigs in the world (approximately) and they can be found on every continent.

2. Pigs are very sociable
They are able to form bonds with people and other animals and show affection. They like to live in groups and sleep together, sometimes snuggling nose to nose. In fact, touching nose to nose is your favorite way of greeting!

3. Pigs are good with a fork
His reputation as a glutton is not for nothing. As they are omnivorous animals, pigs will eat just about anything – even small reptiles! But that doesn't mean that they don't know how to appreciate a good dish. They eat slowly and savor the food. Their favorite foods are grass, roots, fruits and seeds, but they can adapt to their diet according to food availability. Rest is also your beach. They sleep 5 hours a day but can spend up to 19 hours lying down.

4. Pigs are quite eloquent
They communicate with each other all the time, and it's not just to say “Oinc”. There are more than 20 types of sounds, used in different situations – a simple “hello, friend” or an “I'm hungry”.

And they know how to make themselves heard: the growl of an adult pig can reach 115 decibels – almost as loud as a car horn!

Piglets can recognize their mothers' voices calling them to dinner, and as they nurse, they sing to soothe their babies.

5. Pigs are - yes! - very clean
They never use the place where they eat and sleep as a bathroom. This only happens when there is not enough space. Pigs also love bathing in water: And why are they in the mud then? Pigs use wet soil for another reason: because they can't sweat, the mud helps them keep cool on hotter days and works as a sunscreen for their delicate skin. When you hear the expression “sweating like a pig”, know that this is impossible.

(Incidentally, there is a theory that the expression 'sweating like a pig' does not refer to the animal, but to an instrument used for iron smelting that also receives that name).

6. Pigs are very smart
They are inquisitive and insightful, and have an excellent memory. They are in 4th place among the most intelligent species on the planet, ahead even of dogs. Their cognitive intelligence level (similar to that of a three year old) allows them to recognize their names, obey commands, dream and use mirrors to locate food.

Studies have shown that pigs are able to remember directions and find their way home even over long distances, as well as remembering people and other pigs.

7. Pigs love to have fun
Like children, pigs also love to play ball, catch, run and other games. They transform cardboard boxes and other objects they find along the way into toys.

8. Pigs are heroes
There are many stories of pigs saving people's lives. They have saved humans and other animals from fires, drownings and even assaults.
They also have a big heart. When they see another animal or a person in pain, they show discomfort and try to make them feel better.
