The iguana is a genus of herbivorous lizards native to Mexico, Central America, South America, and the Caribbean. The genus was named after Austrian naturalist Josephus Nicolaus Laurenti, who described it in his book Specimen Medicum, Exhibens Synopsin Reptilium Emendatam cum Experimentis circa Venena in 1768. The genus contains two species: the green iguana, which is found throughout its range and is a popular pet, and the Lesser Antillean iguana, which is native to the Lesser Antilles. Genetic analysis suggests that the green iguana is a complex of several species, some of which have only recently been described. However, according to the Reptile Database, all of these are subspecies of the green iguana.
