Origin

Angora is a very old natural cat race and one of the oldest races in the world. Centuries of Angora cats experienced natural selection in the mountainous area of Ankara. The climate is in such a way that his body is strong and the fur is growing long.

Angora is an unknown cat race where it originated. However, some theories say that Angora comes from a wild cat from Asia, namely Pallas cats. However, this theory is doubtful because Pallas cats have the properties that are inversely proportional to Anggora.

Other theories say Angora comes from African wild cats tamed by Tatar tribes. The descendants of African wild cats are believed to be taken to Turkey by Egyptian traders in ancient Egyptian civilization. From these cats, Angora developed through natural selection and bloody marriage in closed mountainous areas.

Legend
These cats in Turkey are often associated with several myths and legends.
One of the very popular legends is Angora's cat belonging to the Prophet Muhammad. It was told, Muezza was fast asleep on his robe. When the Prophet would rush for prayer, he did not want to disturb his cat, then cut off some of his robes.

Another legend believes that cats can bring hope. If someone has a strong desire, he must hold a cat and whisper his desire to the cat's ear. Then, he must caress the cat and if the cat likes it, then his desire will be realized soon.

Some Turks also believe that Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, founder of the Turkish Republic, will be born again one day in the form of a white Angora with one blue and one golden eye. That is the reason why cats with odd-eyed are highly respected in Turkey.

Popularity
The possibility of Angora has existed in Europe since the time of the Crusades. At that time, the Crusaders' soldiers had brought long-haired cats when they returned to Europe. In the 15th century, Angora cats had been brought from Turkey to Europe by several tourists to be bred in France and England, so Angora cats were quite popular in the century of the Renaissance.

In the 16th century, a French scholar, Nicolas-Claude Fabri de Peiresc brought some Angora with him from Ankara to France. He then began to breed the cat and gave his kittens to the nobles as a gift and honor, one of them told Cardinal Richelieu. In that century also, Angora was first sold to rich people in France and England by Sultan Turkey. Angora is increasingly known in Europe when King Louis XV and Maria Antonia maintains an Angora. Da a story that said that Maria Antonia really loved the cat's cat, so she sent her cat through a ship - which was also used for her runaway-to the United States during the French Revolution

In 1620, an Italian Asian explorer, Pietro Della Valle landed in Turkey and then returned to Rome carrying 7 pairs of Angora cats. He then gave the cats to the Roman nobles.

In the 18th century, many people were wrong about Angora cats. At that time, every long hairy cat in Persia was called an Angora cat race. Even though these cats are Persian cats. At that time, a lot of long-haired cats around the city of Angora (now Ankara) and around the Persian area (now Iran). At that time, there was no difference between long-haired cats living in Angora with those in Persia.

When many European traders do business in the Middle East, cats from Turkey and Persia are increasingly imported into Europe. The long-haired cat group was very popular when the cat contest began in England in 1870. Since the cat contest, genetic traits between the Persian race and Angora race began to develop to be even pure and specifically.

In 1917, the Turkish government worked with Ankara Zoo (or Ankara Zoo) to conduct a breeding program for Angora cats. The aim of this program is to protect and preserve pure white Angora cats with odd eyes. The program is still running.

In 1954, Angora was first sold to the United States and began to be developed rapidly in the 1960s in the United States, Scandinavia, and the United Kingdom.

Turks really appreciate Angora's cats, so when it to get an Angora just from Ankara's zoo is very difficult. But in 1962, a wife from the Walter Green Colonel Grant who lived in Turkey named Liesa F. Grant managed to import a pair of Anggora from the zoo to the United States.

International recognition
Angora with the color of white feathers was first recognized in 1968 by a cat registrar organization called the Cat Fanciers' Association (CFA). Because it has been recognized, then since 1970 an annual Angora cat contest has been held. Furthermore, in 1976, Angora got a new class at CFA, namely the championship class. But in 1978, only pure white Angora was recognized. Anggora has also been recognized by FIFE in 1993 and has until now has been recognized by many cat registrar organizations.
