Feeding ants in a test tube can be quite hard.
If you have ants inside a test tube or you are searching for some information on how
to feed ants, then this video is for you!
Keep watching because I have a lot of tricks even the experienced ant keeper will find
helpful.
So first, what do you feed your ants?
We won’t get much into detail about that in this video but it comes down to protein
and sugars.
I usually feed superworms, fruit flies and sugar water.
Right now I’m using wakooshi’s sugar water but soon I will have my own sugar water available
in the store, keep an eye open for that.
There are three methods for feeding ants inside a test tube.
Please note that we won’t cover setups like the mini outworld or other tubs and tubes
setups.
The first way is the most unsafe but in some cases most effective.
If you need to feed a lot of colonies this method might be the best.
Basically you feed directly into the tube by putting an insect in or smearing sugar
water on the test tube.
I often use this strategy because I have quite a few colonies to feed.
It takes some practice because you can’t feed too much.
If you feed too much the ants can drown in the liquid or put all their trash in it.
I don’t recommend it for beginners.
The second way you can feed your colony inside a test tube is by using some kind of platform
to put your food on.
This can be a piece of wax paper, tin foil or a bought feeding dish.
Personally I hate using wax paper or tinfoil.
It is very messy and it takes too much time.
My specialized test tube feeding dishes are perfect for feeding the ants in a test tube
clean and easy.
The third way to feed inside a test tube only works for sugar water.
I recommend everyone to use this trick.
Make a small cotton ball and squirt the sugar water directly on it.
This way the ants can drink from it just fine and they won’t drown in it.
Seriously, this trick is awesome.
For species like tetramorium and lasius this is really a must!
Now that we covered feeding, here are a few more tips on how to feed ants inside a test
tube.
A question I get asked a lot of times is how to feed a colony with a lot of workers?
As you can see this Lasius niger colony has over 200 workers and I still manage to feed
them without any escapees.
Of course it requires practice but the best tip I can give you is to not vibrate too much
with the test tube.
If there are a lot of vibrations the ants get stressed and they want to run out.
If you keep the tube as stable as possible nothing will happen.
If you still struggle with feeding your ants inside a test tube then you might want to
upgrade to a tubs and tubes setup.
This means the ants can get their own food and you can feed them externally.
And I believe that’s everything you should know about feeding ants inside a test tube.
