During a low point in his fortunes, Dyfed Stockwith, a brilliant grammar-school-educated barrister, finds himself prosecuting Jane Muller over an alleged tampering with the brakes of her husband's car. But as he argues a case against defence counsel Carole Pidding, he becomes deeply sceptical about Jane's guilt....
