Use NAVAGE without the Salt Pods!

Navage is a great tool for addressing sinus issues like allergies or when you are dealing with an illness with sinus involvement, or otherwise needing to clear or clean your sinuses.

With that said, Navage salt pods can get pretty expense, especially considering they amount to an otherwise low-cost saline solution. But there’s good news... You can bypass the two switches that prevent you from operating the device without those expensive salt pods!

I can’t take credit for figuring it out. There are lots of videos out there; some with questionable methods. (I don’t advise taking your Navage apart.) But I did make a much shorter, to-the-point how-to video that will have you Navage-ing with your own solution in a jiffy.

SINUS SOLUTION TIPS:

You can use other, less expensive solutions such as those sold for Neti Pots; or you can make your own.

ALWAYS use distilled or sterile water for your nasal solution. Avoid tap water or mineralized water.

ALWAYS ensure any other ingredients you use are safe for use as a sinus rinse.

USE non-iodized, plain, fine grain salt. You don’t want the iodine or the minerals for a saline rinse.

RECIPE – There are lots out there. This is the simplest and easiest:

1 cup distilled or sterile water

1/2 tsp non-iodized, plain, fine grain salt

Heat the mixture and stir to fully dissolve the salt. (You do NOT want to put undissolved salt into your Navage.)

Cool the mixture to a comfortable lukewarm temperature.

Pour the mixture into the machine and use the two switch-tricks to activate the motor.

Use as directed.

FREQUENCY:

This is one of those things that more is not always better. Twice a day, morning and evening, will typically be sufficient. During an active infection, you could use it more frequently. But duration becomes important. If you require use more than 3 weeks, you should consult with a healthcare provider to make sure you aren’t dealing with something that requires additional measures to address properly.

TIPS:

Make sure to breath through your mouth while using the Navage. This will help prevent most, if not all of the saline rinse from draining into your mouth.

If it does drain into your mouth... it is fine. It is just a little salty water. You can spit it out or swallow it. No harm, no foul.

If you simply CANNOT get the solution to drain from the opposite nostril (i.e. it only goes up one nostril and straight down your throat), you may have a temporary sinus cavity blockage due to inflammation and/or volume of mucus buildup. You can use a heat lamp bulb, steam therapy, or some Vick's Vapor Rub to help open up your sinuses and try again. It is best to start using the Navage at the first sign of any congestion to avoid this issue. The bonus is that it will help shorten the duration of whatever it is you are dealing with.

If you find that you simply can't get the Navage (or other nasal rinse method) to work properly, you could have a more permanent, structural issue going on. Try the Navage when you have no sinus issue. If you end up with the same, unsuccessful results, I would suggest seeing an Ear, Nose, and Throat (ENT) doctor for an evaluation.
