Quake (2021) - E1M1: The Slipgate Complex (Nightmare, 100% Secrets, Slipgate Pacifist Achievement)

My next series is a game I've wanted to play on my channel for a long time but never could because it didn't have controller support and I am beyond terrible with mouse and keyboard controls. But a major remaster to the game in August of 2021 fixed that, so now I can play it! So welcome to the wonderful world of Quake!

Quake was built upon the formula of Id Software's previous groundbreaking first-person shooter Doom, and was their first true 3D game. It also became one of the most popular games for both speedrunning and multiplayer deathmatches, so it left a legacy for sure. In this game players take control of an unnamed character who later became known in later games in the series as The Ranger, who is sent into a portal to stop an enemy who had sabotaged the government's teleportation project to send legions of monsters to Earth. To stop this enemy, the Ranger must collect four magical runes in four different hellish dimensions with Lovecraftian dark fantasy settings to blow open the gateway to the enemy's lair.

Players start in a hub level where they can select their difficulty level and episode (you have to play all four, but you can decide the order in which to play them). There are only 3 difficulty hallways, but there is a hidden "Nightmare" difficulty that you can access via a secret passage in the hallway to episode 4. Jump in the water and back all the way up against the wall to land on an elevated ledge, then follow it to the left to access it. Nightmare mode has the same enemy counts as Hard mode, but also throws another twist at you on top of it. In the original 1996 version, Nightmare mode made the enemies faster and more aggressive as well (kind of like Doom's Nightmare mode except without the respawning enemies). In the 2021 Remaster, Nightmare mode caps your maximum health at 50 instead of 100, but doesn't make the enemies faster.

For this playthrough I will be playing through each of the episodes in order on Nightmare mode and uncovering all of the secrets. However, I may miss an enemy or two in a level here or there. For the first map, I'm also doing two separate runs. E1M1: The Slipgate Complex has an achievement attached to it for completing the level on Nightmare without firing a shot. This rule also doesn't allow access to a couple of the secrets, which means I have to play the map a second time for my normal 100% playthrough. However, there is a loophole to this achievement that can make it easier that I exploit in this run. Note the exact wording: "without firing a shot." It didn't say anything about not using your axe. You can kill enemies with your axe and infighting and still get the achievement, as long as you don't use any of your guns.

Also of note for this playthrough: I recorded two separate runs, one with the game music and one without. Because Nine Inch Nails made the soundtrack, their label Universal Music Group copyright-claimed the entirety of my playthrough with the music. I disputed every episode, but some of them were already rejected and others are still pending now. The ones that were rejected I had to re-record with the in-game music volume set to zero, so depending on how the rest of the disputes go, you may see some videos with the music and others without. This map was one of the ones that were already rejected and re-recorded without the music, and because I had already gotten the Slipgate Pacifist achievement in my first playthrough with the music on, it doesn't come up again here.
