River Fishing For Winter Smallmouth Bass & Northern Pike / Winter River Fishing With Lures

In this river fishing video we are winter river fishing with lures on 2 different Mid Michigan rivers. River fishing for Northern Pike has been a staple for me and I have been chasing big pike for many years now. If I was not always going after steelhead I would catch a lot of Northern Pike this time of year. River fishing for winter Smallmouth bass is a whole different ball of wax and I would say it is almost as much of a challenge as targeting steelhead or walleye. The winter smallmouth bass in local rivers are hard to locate for one and on top of that they are usually lethargic making them difficult to target with anything other than live bait. Im not always in it for the challenge like most fisherman I just want to catch fish so what I target depends largely on how much time I have to fish, How much energy I have to expend, time of year and fish migrations. For those quick trips before work I like to hit the local pike holes and bass water and pick up a few battles. Michigan river fishing with lures in the winter requires a slow deep presentation except when the fish are in the shallows then the reaction strike of a jerk bait can be hard to beat. Northern pike fishing lure selection is often about getting a reaction strike. Mimicking a wounded baitfish is another good winter option when sluggish fish don't want to expend energy chasing hard to catch prey. A well presented snack often will not be turned down if these winter fish don't have to expend energy trying to catch a meal. Slow moving spinners and jerk baits fit this bill perfectly and are my top go to for winter river fishing. Winter pike fishing michigan rivers with lures is cheap and easy compared to hauling around live bait that you have to keep alive. When targeting these winter river fish I like to cover lots of ground with a handfull of good lures. When river fishing in winter I am looking for deep water, warm water discharges, shallow weed beds and below dams where bait will congrigate and draw in predatory fish. Northern pike move into the shalows durring winter as where smallmouth bass move to deep holes. Pike are feeding more actively than bass this time of year and tend to cruize the river looking for easy snacks. Winter Pike Fishing on The Grand River Michigan is a lot better than most people immagine as it holds plenty of big pike from the mouth of the river to the headwaters The Grand River and its tributaries are loaded with Northern Pike. I can target pike all year round successfully on The Grand River but the big ones come out to play in fall and winter.Show more
