It was not uncommon to see the occasional plague doctor in Eversteam when Penelope was a child. They were a very Useful Bunch. They carried the ancient tradition of using natural ingredients from the Earth to create herbal remedies that could heal anything from asthma to zygomycosis. Some stood on street corners selling sprigs of lavender and other flowers. Others rode horse-drawn carriages from town to town, selling their “magique” tonics. But the more respected ones ran apothecaries.
Over the years, they were seen lessandless. Penelope’s grandfather had told her that with technological advances and man-made medicine, the Plague Doctor was not needed as much anymore. He had thought it strange that people seemed to be getting sicker rather than healthier now that the plague doctors were scarce and the other type of doctors were prominent. Now that she thought about it, she found it rather strange as well.
