As part of our Great Kitchen Makeover, our old washing machine had to go. As a gadget lover, I was keen to find a suitably high tech model to replace it with and after much investigation, this seemed to be the best as regards features, favourable reviews and price.

The Hoover H-Wash 500 comes in a wide range of specifications with drum sizes between 8 and 14kg, some with and some without Care Dose, some at 1600rpm maximum spin speed and some at lower. Also available in black and grey in the end I went for the 9kg, 1600 rpm model with Care Dose in white. Priced at £429.99 it did not seem bad given the features on offer.

The H-Wash 500 resembles most other modern washers with an oversized door and drain port on the front with a single large rotary program selector above it next to a large soft-touch control panel incorporating a large scrolling LED status display. The scrolling display shows the details of the current running program with the time left for it to run.

I chose the 9 Kg load model, easily large enough for our two person household, with the maximum 1600 rpm spin speed option - I think 1200 and 1400 versions are also available. I also selected Care Dose which for me is a compelling option and allows the machine to automatically determine the correct amount of liquid detergent and softener for the selected wash from the two reservoirs in the dispensing tray. When the two reservoirs are full there will be enough for multiple washes. An LED on the front panel or within the app will come on when either level gets low although both are rather small and easily overlooked. The dispensing tray also has a container for powder or tablets for one-time use. The Care Dose system works well and I have found I use far less detergent or softener than before and it is one less thing to worry about when using the machine.

The other main selling point for this machine is the Wifi smart control feature. On the front panel dial is an option for remote control, select this and the device will connect to your phone to allow full remote control of the washing machine. To use this first download the hOn app and follow the on-screen instructions to connect to the machine to your home wifi, a quick and easy process that worked for me the first time and since then has connected automatically in the background. With the machine dial set to Wifi and the app open you can select a suitable washing program from the 52 on offer. You can modify each program - adding additional rinses, changing soil level, spin speed and water temperature amongst others and these can be saved as favourites within the app. The app will also show the current progress of the wash and the amount of time left. Should the app be opened when wifi is turned off on the machine you can still monitor and be alerted regarding the current wash but without the ability to control or change it. You can switch to or from wifi mode on the washer dial when a wash is in progress if needed without affecting it. Before starting a wash the app will even alert you if rain is forecast for your area in case you need to dry it outside! At the time of writing the app does not connect to Amazon Alexa (unlike the old Hoover app) and so will not give you progress reports or control through the Alexa system.

In use the machine works really well, is quiet in use even when spinning at 1600 rpm with just a glance at the front panel to see the remaining time. Some wash times are pretty lengthy with some almost three hours. There are not many low-temperature washes available from the front panel but others can be found or customised within the app.

This is a fantastic washing machine but be careful when ordering to select the right model for your needs as there is a complicated and non-intuitive naming system for them. This machine is not perfect, I would like to see more low-temperature programs accessible from the front dial, the app is good but slow to load and the Case Dose reservoir alert is not prominent enough. The machine can be operated well enough from the front panel really does need the app to get the best from it and probably might not be suitable for a non-techy user.

This is a great machine for the techy user, that works well and at a price that is not excessive for the features available.
