This video is our travel guide to Tamarindo Costa Rica. We review what to do, what to eat and places to stay. We are a travel family of four with kids ages 7 and 11 and we love Costa Rica and will be going back.

Our favorite things to do include:
Beaches
Play Flamingo
This tropical beach has crystal blue waters and white sand. When you picture a beach this usually what comes to mind. Some activities you can do here are scuba diving, surfing, and just frolicking in the water. This is one of Tamarindo’s jewels. It’s about a 20 minute drive from Tamarindo

Playa Langosta
If you’re looking for a laid back atmosphere this is the beach for you. Beautiful white sand, small hotels and a great beach club where you can soak in a pool all day and rent boogie boards. You can also ride horses and go for long walks. It’s Just 2 km’s south of Tamarindo

Playa Avellanas
Referred to as little Hawaii by the locals. This is a great surfing beach with waves that can reach up to 18 feet. This tranquil secluded white sand beach has a bar with a 400 kg pig that is there to welcome you while you have drinks and food.

Playa Grande
This beach is miles long of fine pale sand, perfect for long strolls on the beach. This is where the leatherback turtles come to lay their eggs. So if you go at the right time of year you just might get lucky. It good to note that this beach is in a protected national park of Las Baulas

Horse Back Riding
Although we didn’t get to this activity the last time we were there, horseback riding is a great activity and worth a mention. Tamarindo offers to ride on the beach or in the country. Our daughter was so disappointed we didn’t go! It cost approximately 50$ us per hour.

Surfing
Tamarindo is a popular destination for surfing because of its beautiful beaches, long waves, and favorable weather conditions. Regardless of your experience level, you’re sure to enjoy your surfing experience here. Lessons are offered for all age groups and cost approximately $50.00 US for 2 hours.

Catamaran Tour
Our family loves getting on the boat for an adventure. A Catamaran tour will cost around 100 US Dollars for a 4 ½ to 5-hour tour. For people who enjoy a day out sailing this is an amazing day out.

Shopping
If you love to shop at the local markets and checking artisan wares, Tamarindo has you covered. There is a wide selection of crafts and souvenirs, plenty of them hand-made by locals. Plus lots of clothing shops in which you can upgrade your beachwear.

Nightlife
If you like vibrant nightlife, this is the place for you. Lots of pubs and restaurants right on the beach many with live bands. There is always something going on after the sun has set

Wildlife
As in all of Costa Rica, there is a ton of wildlife to see. We saw iguanas all over the place, howler monkeys, tropical birds, scorpions, and if you’re brave enough there are tours of the mangroves where there are crocodiles.

Sunsets
Most people love a beautiful Sunset. Well, you don’t want to miss the sunsets in Tamarindo, We’ve traveled the world and the sunsets here are so unique and stunning.

WHAT TO EAT:
Eat at Sodas
When you visit Costa Rica and you have to try Sodas which are little family-owned local Costa Rican restaurants that are usually small and open air. They serve traditional Costa Rican dishes and they are popular with the locals. Must-try dishes include Gallo pinto – it is a dish of rice, beans, onions, red peppers, and cilantro.

Costa Rican Coffee
We are huge fans of coffee and love trying different coffees as we travel. Coffee is grown and produced in abundance in Costa Rica and is one of their major exports. They take their coffee seriously and have won many international awards around the world for their coffee. Make sure you try it!

Coconut water & fresh fruit drinks
Called “Pipa fria” which is known as a cold coconut is sold at roadside stands and on the beach. It costs between $1 and $2. We drank a ton of these refreshing drinks! There is also plenty of blended smoothie-type fruit stands at the side of the road that is so delicious!

WHERE TO STAY
There are plenty of types of accommodations in Costa Rica including hotels, fancy resorts, rental Condos, and our favourite AirBNB’s. What you choose depends on what your needs are. Everywhere we travel, budget is always a consideration so we find AirBnb’s the best deal. We like to be in areas where the locals live and be able to cook many of our own meals. There are some great Airbnb options in Tamarindo!
