The Oldest Living Person on Earth

On Oct. 26th, 2018 Julia Flores Colque turned 118 years old. This makes her the oldest living person on earth today and puts her as the 3rd oldest person to have ever lived, that we have records of. Sarah Knauss of the United States made it to 119 years and 97 days old before passing on in 1999. Jeanne Calment of France holds the record for oldest person ever lived at 122 years and 164 days old when she passed on in 1997.

Turning 118 years old, Julia is more than 2 years older than the next oldest living person, Kane Tanaka of Japan who is 115 years, 302 days old.

Julia was born in a mining camp in the mountains of Bolivia in 1900. She has lived through 2 world wars, the creation of machines used in the industrial revolution, the invention of the car, airplane, radio, television, satellites, computer, internet, cell phone, and the modern connected world we live in today.

In the Bolivian highlands Julia herding sheep and llamas at a young age. Moving into a valley she sold fruits and vegetables which became the primary source of her diet with the rare indulgence of a glass of soda or a piece of cake. A woman described as always moving, always doing something, Julia was never busy with a marriage or children. She has lived in the rural town of Sacaba when it only had a population of 3000 people to what it is today a city of more than 175,000. In a country with low life expectancy she is an outlier but the mayor of Sacaba named her a living legend and provided her with a nice brick pathway to her home, a shower, toilet and new railing.

Enjoying the company of her cats, dogs and chickens Julia is hard of hearing but is sharp, alert and mentally all there. She lives a simple life and still sings and enjoys playing her Andean guitar the charango. A handful of years ago she fell while walking, hurting her back. Her doctor told her she would never walk again but she denied that diagnosis and push through the injury and is now back on her feet.

Julia isn’t in the guinness world record books yet nor have they been contacted by Julia or anyone in her family. Julia is actually unaware of Guinness and their record books.

Can you imagine what it would be like to live through the wars and the creation of all these inventions as Julia has? Share your thoughts in the comments.
