The Albatros was the lead ship of a class of Italian corvettes designed and built in the 1950s. The resultant ships were operated by Italy, Denmark, Indonesia and the Netherlands, with the last of the class being retired from service in 1991. The Albatros herself was launched in July 1954, commissioned in June 1955 and stricken from service in April 1989 after four years as an accomodation hulk.

The Albatros was 76.3 meters long, 9.7 meters wide, 2.8 meter draft and weight in at 800 tons standard displacement. It was powered by 4 Fiat M409 diesel engines generating 5200 horsepower into 2 shafts for a max speed of 19 knots. It was armed at launch with 2x Oto-Melara SMP3 autoloading 76mm 62 caliber guns, 2x 40mm Bofors AA guns, 4x Anti-Submarine Warfare mortars, 2x hedgehog projectors and a depth charge rack. Later updates would replace the complex and unreliable 76mm SMP3 guns with additional 40mm guns, add torpedo tubes and remove the mortars. The ship carried a crew of 117 men.

The Albatros will be joining the Italian Rank V coastal fleet in its early armament configuration with the SMP-3 76mm guns.
