Rainbow River Colombia

Located deep in the jungle of Colombia is a river like no other. On this Episode we reveal the beauty of the rainbow river.

Commonly called the river of five colors or liquid rainbow, the rainbow river or Cano Cristales has been dubbed the most beautiful river in the world. Located 174 miles or 280 km south of Bogota, Colombia’s capital city of over 8 million, the rainbow river lies deep in the jungle in the province of meta. This region of the country is thriving with biodiversity. Over 2000 plant species, 50 orchard, 1,200 insect, 550 bird, 100 reptile, 8 monkey species all exists as well as deer, cougar, anteaters and jaguars.

Getting to the river can be a difficult journey, a 27 hour drive south through Neiva and Florencia then east to La Macarena will get you there. The problem with this aside from the over 1 day straight of driving is this territory is inhabited by guerillas and pirates. The other more logical solution is to take a 1 and half hour flight from Bogota straight there, which is what most tourists do.

Still a dangerous region of Colombia, the small town of La Macarena was taken back by the government in 2009 and still has many armed troops stationed there. As you can see here on this map, la macarena is located in the substantial risk zone.

From town a trip into Serrania de la Macarena national park starts with a 1.8 mile or 3 km boat ride up Guayabero river, 6 mile or 10km drive in a 4x4 then a short hike to get to Cano Cristales. All in it’ll take over 5 hours to get there.

At first glance you’ll notice the incredible display of colors, this is from the macarenia clavigera a river plant unique to this area. The five colors of the rainbow river are red, green, white, yellow, and black which are all plant life not algae. This colorful river vegetation glows a bright red during perfect conditions between the wet and dry seasons in the months of September and November. The wet season has this river flowing too fast which clouds the bottom of the river from receiving sunlight which is essential for the plants to turn red. The dry season has too little water running down the river so you’ll need to be there during that short window of time to see it.

If you’re planning on making the voyage here, a few things to note. The temperature outside can get up to over 90 degree F or 32 degrees C. With that said sunblock and bug spray is banned in the area so you’ll want to bring some uv protective sleeves which we’ve linked down below. Airlines will also make sure you’ve been vaccinated for yellow fever at least 10 days before your day of travel. Malaria medication is a good idea as it is a real risk in rural, lowland Colombia. Only a certain amount of visitors a day can venture out to the rainbow river so you’ll either need to go with a guide or apply for a permit yourself which can take up to 3 days to receive. Most people tend to book in all trips that include flight, accommodation, food and transportation.

While the government of Colombia is doing everything it can to protect this rare and beautiful river, in 2016 the US oil company Hupecol Operation was obtained rights to do fracking in the area around Cano Cristales. If you’re not familiar with fracking it’s a highly destructive way of getting oil and gas out of the ground by injecting sand, water and chemicals at high pressure. It destroys underground water systems and the environment where it’s practiced. This idea of fracking near the rainbow river outraged the citizens of Colombia which resulted with the government suspending Hupecol Operatings fracking license in 2016. Fast forward a year later this soulless oil company is now suing the Colombia government for 28 million dollars.
