5. Black Rice
This dark colored rice originates from Japan as far back as 2500 B.C. Also known as forbidden rice, emperor’s rice or purple rice this variety is more difficult to grow and may have been less popular throughout time. It’s unsure what has caused the dark color of these grains, possibly a gene mutation, either way just as other dark colored plant foods like beets and blueberries the black rice is full of antioxidants. Anthocyanin pigment a flavonoid present in the rice is responsible for this dark purplish color. It is believed this rice has anti cancer and anti inflammatory properties as well linked to reducing obesity diabetes and heart disease. The black rice comes in two forms, long grain jasmine or sticky glutinous rice, which is actually gluten free. This high fibre rice takes more time to cook then any other type and has a slightly nutty flavour to it. Being a solid source of protein and iron this rice is a welcome addition to any diet. Something to note this rice has more the double the calories then brown rice so when dishing out portions you’ll only need to eat half as much to achieve satiety.
4. Kalinga Jekot Rice
This medium grain sticky rice is a rusty brown rice that turns slightly purple when cooked. This rare heirloom rice grows in the remote rice terraces of upper Kalinga in the Philippines. Traditional sticky rice is used in sweet snacks and desserts like mango sticky rice and this rice is no different. This nutty whole grain rice can also be used in savory dishes, salads and soups. They add nice bright vibrant color which comes we added antioxidants for better health.
3. Ifugao Diket Sticky Rice
Not too far away from the Kalinga Jekot rice, just a few valleys away is the Ifugao Diket Sticky rice. This rare hand harvested sticky rice grows in the rice terraces surrounding Banaue, Ifugao. This UNESCO World Heritage Site provides a protected space for this heirloom rice to flourish. Darker than the previous rice this one will add a deeper richness to any dish it’s added to. Being a more costly rice the Ifugao Diket is full of vitamins and nutrients that have been essential for the people of the Philippines for years.
2. Jade Pearl Bamboo Rice
This fancy looking green rice is one with a bit of a secret. It’s actually medium-grain white rice that is dyed green with bamboo juice. The reason this is done is to add a green tea flavour and aroma to the rice. The green color comes from the Chlorophyll in the bamboo which adds a nice array of nutrients to this rice which you’d normally not have like B vitamins, vitamin C, vitamin E, potassium, manganese, calcium, and phosphorus. Bamboo juice is also hydrating, adds a nice flavour, and antibacterial. If you have the choice the jade pearl rice is a great alternative to normal white rice.
1. Colusari Red Rice / Red Bhutanese
This crimson colored rice also called colusari red rice, red bhutanese, and cargo rice is often thought of as more of a weed then a crop. Red rice plants can under produce crop compared to other varieties which could be why it isn’t common. Used extensively in traditional Chinese medicine this rice is starting to be backed heavily by science. Being a fibrous full flavoured, nutty tasting rice, the red rice is loaded with zinc, iron, potassium, sodium, manganese and antioxidants. A strong aid fighting asthma, heart disease, osteoporosis, obesity, high glucose levels and cholesterol. Be prepared to have whatever you mix with this rice turn red which can be used to create colorful dishes.
