Double hung windows are a popular type of window in today’s homes. These windows open from both the top and the bottom to allow for air circulation, ease of cleaning and other functions.

Our video will show you how to use a single Honeywell 5811 door and window sensor to protect both the upper and lower window from intrusion. Follow along with the video to learn how you can minimize the number of sensors needed to protect your home from intrusion.

The location of the sensor is vital. To protect both halves of the double hung window, you can’t place the sensor at the bottom or the top. Otherwise, you would need 2 sensors to protect the entire window.

As you will see in the video, the sensor must be places in the middle of the window on the lower half cross bar. You need to ensure that the magnet that is placed on the window pane frame of the upper half will not come into contact with the lower half’s frame when it is opened.

The video will show you an option for mounting the magnet if there isn’t enough clearance. The magnet can be removed from the case and attached to the frame with an epoxy, if that need arises in your particular situation.

As the video will detail, you must ensure that the mounting surfaces are as clean as possible. This is a crucial step when mounting using the double sided tape. Once you have cleaned the surface, ensure that the area is also dry and clear of debris.

The Honeywell 5811 door and window sensor should already be enrolled in the system. You can watch our enrollment video to learn how to do this if you haven’t done so already.
After you now where you are going to mount the magnet and the mounting surface is clean and dry, remove the backing paper from the tape and press it firmly against the mounting area.

Once the magnet is in place, you can align the sensor. Follow along with the video to see how this is done. Once you are sure where the sensor needs to be placed, remove the paper backing from the double sided tape on the sensor.

As you will learn from the video there are hash mark lines on the sensor. The magnet must be aligned between these markings. Once you have aligned the sensor to the magnet press firmly on the sensor to adhere the tape to the window frame.

Once you are done affixing the sensor and magnet you need to test that the senor is operational and that the magnet and sensor do not come in contact with the window frame.

As long as there is no contact and the sensor alarms at the panel, your installation is complete and you have successfully used a single Honeywell 5811 to protect a double hung window.
