Since it’s cold and snowing outside I decided to pull out our latest field cam footage. We have seen quite a few animals out here in the wilds of Southern Kentucky! It’s great to see all of these animals
That includes:
Deer - lots of deer - What do people do with deer? Sometimes you get a new car with one. People of Appalachia and other country folk used to shoot the deer and save the meat for the winter. Eat the heart and save what little fat there may be around the internals.
Not only the meat but they would save everything. Save the pelt for the leather, make boots, gloves, hats, and more. nothing would go to waste when you depended on this for staying alive. 80-90 years ago it was somewhat rare to come across deer. Now it seems there are so many it’s dangerous to drive! I’ve hit a couple deer myself.

Rabbits - We used to hunt them when was a kid in Indiana! I remember my uncles with my dad and cousins making that our Thanksgiving afternoon! We’d see if we could kick them up and I always remember my uncle having an old double barrel 12 gauge! I was only 7 or so. Sometimes you would have several people shoot the same rabbit and there would be nothing left of it after the bird shot destroyed the guy.
We also see squirrels down here. They seem to like the Black Walnut trees. In town we see them all over. They will have so much fun out on the trees and power lines, that our cats star at them as if they were jealous!
Black snake or a rat snake. Angel saw one of these when we were digging out the creek for the culvert.

Raccoons - can be troublesome in town. Out here in the woods, they are just part of the ecosystem. Raccoons will eat about anything. They love Chicken! They also love corn. Just so happens to be my corn. I guess it’s there’s now. Predators will eat Raccoons such as bobcats, coyotes, bears, eagles and more.

We’ve have seen a coyote and fox on the cams too. These animals appear to love the trail we have made up the mountain.

Box Turtle - Here you see one that I picked up. Raccoons, chipmunks, skunks, coyotes, foxes, snakes and owls will all go after a box turtle but they are usually not effective on adults since they can retreat into their shells.

One animal that we have not seen is a beaver but we know they are here and very active with all of the evidence we have found. We have setup a camera on a new dam they have started, so hopefully a video soon will have one it. It may be time to target practice too!

Turkeys. In Ohio I see lots of turkeys but Haven’t ran across any yet in Southern Kentucky. We’ll see as we stay more, if we run into them. Same with bears. We know bears are here from talking to be people here but we haven’t seen any yet.
