The Elements of the Drum Rudiments can be broken up into smaller or larger components ..

It can become extremely boring and predictable to sit and practice the 40 drum rudiments each day. So what we need to do is become creative when we do sit down and work with them. I've tried everything: Lead with the weaker hand,, blend a few of the rudiments together to build a hybrid and unique rhythmic melody,. play accents with in the rudiments sub divisions etc..
What is true is when our instructors reminded us to learn them inside and out, backwards and forwards, the results begin to surprise us.

From my own perspective at the beginning the rudiments work both the physical and mental (phycological) attributes of the drummer/musician. The results become an emotional reward as we continue to achieve what we want on the instrument.
The hands (and feet) must be able to react to the messages our brains (and mind) are sending and feeling to our hands. (and feet) instantaneously..
So our hands must be at peek performance which is why the famous drummer Vinny Caliuta works his hands on a practice pad each day.
Discipline does equal Freedom .
