The technology that our Government is capable of far surpasses what we think as possible.

First Self-Replicating, Synthetic Bacterial Cell Constructed by J. Craig

"We're not creating life from scratch in the test tube," he said. "We're creating new life forms by creating new versions of the genetic code."

Craig Venter · Biologist, genetics pioneer
In 2001, Craig Venter made headlines for sequencing the human genome. In 2003, he started mapping the ocean's biodiversity. And now he's created the first synthetic lifeforms -- microorganisms that can produce alternative fuels.

JCVI scientists created the first cell having a synthetic genome back in 2010. However,
it was not entirely fabricated from scratch, with the scientists using a mycoplasma -
a simple bacteria usually without a cell wall - as the basis. After removing the original DNA in these cells,
they replaced it with a new DNA they have designed with a computer and synthesized in a laboratory.
This cell was originally called JCVI-syn1.0

It’s happened.
The first children genetically engineered with the powerful DNA-editing tool called CRISPR-Cas9 have been born to a woman in China. Their altered genes will be passed to their children, and their children’s children. Join CRISPR’s co-discoverer, microbiologist Jennifer Doudna, as we explore the perils and the promise of this powerful technology.

It is not the first time human ingenuity has created something capable of doing us great good and great harm. Are we up to the challenge of guiding how CRISPR will shape the future?
