Former US President Donald Trump's ex-personal lawyer, Rudy Giuliani, has been ordered to pay $148m (£116m) to two Georgia women over his false claims they tampered with votes in 2020. A judge had already found Mr Giuliani, 79, liable of making defamatory claims about Ruby Freeman and her daughter Wandrea "Shaye" Moss. They had sought between $15m and $43m in damages. The verdict came after a four-day trial to determine the penalty.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has told Russians that peace with Ukraine will only take place "when we achieve our objectives". He is holding his first major news conference since he launched his first full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. Mr Putin has combined his annual "direct line" phone-in with Russians with an audience of journalists. The annual event did not take place last year.

Dozens of people have been injured in a wave of missile strikes on the Ukrainian capital Kyiv overnight, authorities say. Fifty-three people were hurt in the attacks, including six children, Kyiv mayor Vitali Klitschko said. Kindergarten and hospital buildings were reportedly damaged by debris as authorities said 10 Russian ballistic missiles had been shot down. The strikes happened after President Volodymyr Zelensky left the US.

The head of Sudan's army has said he is willing to talk to the commander of rebel forces whom he is battling for control of the country. Gen Abdel Fattah al-Burhan said he was ready in principle to sit down with Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, leader of the Rapid Support Forces (RSF). The two men have been fighting a brutal internal war since April, which the UN said has left more 5,000 people dead. It said that more than five million people have been displaced. US President Joe Biden plans to give Ukraine advanced long-range missiles to help Kyiv with its ongoing counter-offensive, US media reports. They quote US officials familiar with the issue as saying Ukraine will get some ATACMS missiles with a range of up to 190 miles (300km). This would enable Kyiv to hit Russian targets deep behind the front line. At least one Ukrainian missile hit the headquarters of Russia's Black Sea fleet in annexed Crimea on Friday. Italy’s government is planning to criminalise people who travel abroad to have children via surrogacy, which is already banned in the country. While the majority of Italians who seek surrogacy abroad are believed to be heterosexual, many same-sex parents fear the new law is targeting LGBT families by making it harder for them to have children. A recent Ipsos poll shows that 45% of Italians oppose the idea of surrogacy, but 45% were also in favour of granting legal recognition for children born via surrogacy. Ukraine's President Zelensky has addressed the Canadian parliament, praising the country's commitment to "defending freedom." Canadian PM Justin Trudeau welcomed Zelensky and pledged C$650m in aid for Ukraine. The three-year "predictable, steady support for Ukraine" will include some 50 armoured vehicles as well as training for F-16 pilots, he says. Nasa chiefs have said they hope to launch its new Moon rocket, the Space Launch System, later this week. The Artemis 1 mission blast off was postponed at first after controllers struggled to get an engine on the 100m-tall vehicle cooled down to its correct operating temperature. It is the biggest rocket ever developed by Nasa and in time will be used to send astronauts back to the Moon. Nasa administrator Bill Nelson said the brand new rocket would not fly "until it is ready".

The first export of wheat from Ukraine since the invasion of Russia in February has arrived in Djibouti, east Africa. The 23,000-ton shipment is bound for Ethiopia which is struggling with ongoing drought and conflict. A recent agreement between Russia and Ukraine, mediated by the UN and Turkey, has allowed 50 ships to resume shopping grain around the world.

Meghan Duchess of Sussex has told a US magazine she upset the "dynamic of the hierarchy" of the Royal Family "just by existing". In an interview with The Cut, Meghan, 41, talks about her life when she was a royal and why she and Prince Harry moved to the US. Talking about her exit from the Royal Family, the duchess said it "takes a lot of effort to forgive".

At least 23 people have been killed in some of the worst fighting for years in Iraq's capital, Baghdad. The violence was sparked by Shia Muslim cleric Moqtada al-Sadr decision to quit politics. Gunshots and rocket-fire rang out as supporters of Mr Sadr clashed with security forces and militias aligned with Iran. Mr Sadr has ordered his supporters to withdraw from outside parliament, where they have been protesting for weeks. Iraq has been in a state of political paralysis since inconclusive elections in 2021.

More than 33 million people in Pakistan, one in seven of the population, have been affected by the flooding, officials estimate. This year's record monsoon is comparable to the devastating floods of 2010, the deadliest in Pakistan's history, which left more than 2,000 people dead. UN chief Antonio Guterres has warned that Pakistan is facing "a monsoon on steroids", after floods submerged a third of the country. As he launched a $160 million appeal to help the tens of millions affected by the disaster, Guterres urged the world to come to Pakistan's aid.

Mikhail Gorbachev, the former Soviet leader who brought the Cold War to a peaceful end, has died aged 91. Mr Gorbachev, who took power in 1985, opened up the Soviet Union to the world and introduced a set of reforms at home. But he was unable to prevent the slow collapse of the Soviet Union, from which modern Russia emerged. Tributes have been paid worldwide, with UN chief António Guterres saying he "changed the course of history". US President Joe Biden called him a "rare leader". However, many Russians never forgave their former leader for the turmoil that followed the collapse of the USSR.

Shamima Begum, who fled the UK and joined the Islamic State group when she was a teenager, was smuggled into Syria by an intelligence agent for Canada. Ms Begum was 15 when she and two other east London schoolgirls travelled to Syria to join the IS group in 2015. Files seen by the BBC show he claimed to have shared Ms Begum's passport details with Canada, and smuggled other Britons to fight for IS. Ms Begum's lawyers are challenging the removal of her British citizenship, arguing she was a trafficking victim. Canada and the UK declined to comment on security issues.

Monsoon rains have caused devastating floods in Pakistan, leaving millions homeless, destroying buildings, bridges and roads and leaving vast swathes of the country under water. Flash floods and landslides along the Indus and Kabul rivers have left more than 1,000 dead and 1,600 injured - with the southern districts of Balochistan and Sindh worst-affected. UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres has launched an appeal to raise £137m to help provide 5.2 million people with aid.

Russia has cut the amount of the gas it sends to Europe by shutting the key Nord Stream 1 pipeline for the second time this summer. It said the latest restrictions would last for three days, and were necessary to allow repairs. Russia has already significantly reduced its energy exports to the continent, sending prices soaring, but denies using gas as a political weapon. Europe has historically been very reliant on Russian gas to meet its energy needs.

Swiss glaciers, which attract skiers and climbers and are essential to Europe’s water supply, have been disappearing at record speed. A new study shows that Switzerland’s glaciers have lost more than half their volume in less than 100 years. This year’s hot summer has accelerated the loss of ice.

The operator of the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant has said two reactors have been shut down due to shelling as UN inspectors travel to investigate the stability of the site. The UN convoy heading to inspect Europe's largest nuclear plant have also reported shelling along the agreed route to the plant, slowing down their progress. The site has been occupied by Russian forces since March and has been shelled a number a number of times. Both sides have blamed each other for attacks on the plant.

An inspection team from the United Nations nuclear watchdog is on its way to Ukraine's embattled Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant, the organisation's head said. Rafael Grossi, director general of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) said the team was expected to arrive at the plant later this week. The nuclear plant has been occupied by invading Russian troops since March.

Volunteers are racing medical supplies from the UK to the Ukrainian front line. Over two days, 1,000 miles and six countries, they transported vans loaded with trauma kits, oxygen regulators and ultrasound machines. The convoy, organised by the Ukrainian Medical Association of the UK, is made of Ukrainian doctors and nurses working in the UK. Both the World Health Organization and the UK government have already delivered hundreds of tonnes of supplies to hospitals in Ukrainian capital, Kyiv and other cities.

Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko has announced a 35-hour curfew for people in the capital, warning "today is a difficult and dangerous moment". It comes after Russian air strikes hit residential buildings and a metro station overnight. Emergency services say that four people were killed in an attack on an apartment block in the city. Meanwhile, negotiations between Russian and Ukrainian representatives are set to resume and a journalist has reportedly been arrested after interrupting Russian state TV with a sign reading "no war ".

Yemen, one of the Arab world's poorest countries, has been devastated by a civil war. Aid agencies have warned that millions of people face hunger, as the country experiences some of the worst violence since the conflict began eight years ago. Air strikes continue in the country, and the UN has condemned 'double tap' attacks which come in rapid succession and target rescuers coming to the aid of the initial victims.

People across the UK are opening their homes to Ukrainian refugees as the government launches its Homes for Ukraine site. 89,000 signed up within the first day. Housing and Communities Secretary Michael Gove said the UK had a history of "supporting the most vulnerable during their darkest hours". He said there would be no limit to how many Ukrainians could enter the UK under the visa sponsorship scheme. Each household housing a refugee will be offered £350 a month, tax-free. They will not be expected to provide food and living expenses but can choose to offer this.
