The video begins with a brief name change announcement, followed by a humorous stuck chicken tractor incident. The tone shifts as the family discusses the devastating impact of the tornadoes on their community, including loss of life, injuries, and property damage.
The vlog then details the communication failures experienced during the storm, emphasizing the importance of reliable communication systems. The family's recovery efforts are showcased, as they come together to help their community recover from the disaster.

In the wake of the devastating Memorial Day weekend tornadoes that swept across several states, including Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, and Kentucky, the impact on the affected communities has been profound.
The death toll reached at least 22, with the storms leaving behind a trail of destruction, including homes and businesses leveled, and power outages affecting hundreds of thousands of people. The National Weather Service confirmed the presence of at least 11 tornados in Arkansas alone, contributing to the significant loss of life and property.
Arkansas communities are uniting to rebuild after what has been described as the deadliest tornado outbreak in a decade. The storms have been particularly deadly in Arkansas, with at least eight fatalities recorded in the state. The recovery efforts are extensive, with communities working together to clean up and rebuild what was lost.
The severe weather has also affected travel and infrastructure across the affected states. For instance, Arkansas Governor Sarah Huckabee Sanders held a press conference in Bentonville, highlighting the strength of Arkansans in vulnerable moments and emphasizing the importance of community resilience in the face of such disasters.
These events serve as a stark reminder of the unpredictable and often devastating power of nature, as well as the resilience and spirit of communities in the face of adversity.

Smoking Ham, Chicken Coops, And Gardening Adventures: A Busy Homesteading Week On The Backroads
Welcome to another episode of Backroads Homesteading! This week, we've had a busy schedule filled with various projects around the homestead. From setting up a new chicken coop to smoking our first ham, it's been an eventful week. Enjoy the second longer-form video this week as we get more into storytelling mode.
Full blog post - https://backroadshomesteading.com/cold-hard-truths/
0:00 Intro
0:23 Chicken Coop
First off, we got our chicken coop inside and set up the chickens temporarily to get them acclimated to their new surroundings. Em's been keeping an eye on them to make sure they're settling in well.
1:17 Smoker Update
We also had an exciting moment as we smoked our first ham. Although we didn't raise the pig entirely on our homestead, we were involved in most of the process. The ham turned out pretty good for our first attempt, thanks to the East Oak smoker we got from Amazon. It's a budget-friendly option that worked well for us.
https://amzn.to/3PBUGCy EAST OAK 30" Digital Electric Smoker, Outdoor Smoker with Glass Door and Meat Thermometer, 725 Sq Inches of Cooking with Remote, 4 Detachable Racks Smoker Grill for Party, Home BBQ, Night Blue (affiliate link)
2:30 Garden Update
With the threat of freezing temperatures seemingly behind us, we've moved our produce out of the pole barn. We also invested in some cattle panels, albeit mistakenly getting the more expensive horse panels. Despite the budget mishap, we're setting up a trellis system for our beans, peas, and tomatoes.
7:42 Pole Barn Fixes
The week also involved some maintenance work on our pole barn. We're replacing the roof screws on the main building and the original lean-to. It's important to replace these every few years to prevent leaks and deterioration.
9:45 @WhiteRockNATION Time
Lastly, we spent some time with friends on the ridge, helping them build something for their homestead. It's always great to spend time with like-minded people, sharing stories and enjoying good food.
11:45 Spraying Knockdown
Additionally, we tackled a home improvement project by spraying knockdown texture on the walls. It's been a while since we've done this, so it was a bit of a learning curve to get the right consistency and technique. But the results are turning out great, adding a nice texture to the walls.
17:00 Knocking Down The Pattern
20:43 Outro

Homestead Protection
Fencing is a major issue right now. As we start planting seeds, time is running out to get the fence fixed before the seeds go into the ground. With the massive deer herd and other predictors looming, our plants and fruit trees have little time before action needs to be taken.

Different Types of Grow Lights Compared. Does it matter for seed starting?
Through the years of growing microgreens and starting seeds in the green houses, we discuss LED grow lights as we set up our 2024 seed racks with the lights.

In my video titled "We install grow lights and regular lights. Does it matter?", I, Ryan from Backroads Homestead, demonstrate the process of setting up LED growing racks using various LED grow lights. I have an assortment of lights, including full-spectrum white shop lights and specialized grow lights, mostly acquired from Amazon and big box stores. My goal is to find out which lights are more effective for plant growth.
Throughout the video, I show how to connect up to six lights in a daisy chain and stress the importance of using strong zip ties. I specifically recommend 11-inch zip ties for their strength. I also share a modification I made to some of the lights by removing the heat shield. This allows more heat to reach the plants, although it does make the lights less structurally rigid.
I share insights from my experience, noting that regular full-spectrum shop lights perform just as well as specialized grow lights for plant growth. This discovery is a significant one, indicating that effective gardening doesn't require expensive, specialized equipment.
Towards the end of the video, I mention my plans to start seeding and make additional adjustments to the setup. I wrap up by asking viewers to subscribe and support my channel, expressing my concern that the channel is being restricted due to its focus on sustainability topics.

Ice Damage, Leaks, Overcoming Struggles, & Radio Practice
In this weeks video, we tackle some construction with our friends from Wisconsin, fix trussing and install a fan with our neighbor, play with radios, and handle the difficult situation of ice damage to our building.
A huge shout out to @WernerLadderCo for your support!
In the video titled "Upgrades, Fixes, Construction, Oh My! | Ice Damage, Leaks, Overcoming Struggles, & Radio Practice," Ryan from Back Roads Homesteading shares updates on various projects and challenges faced on their homestead. Significant progress was made in Link's room, with assistance from Eric and Jenny from Wisconsin who helped in installing drywall, boards, insulation, and a vapor barrier. A neighbor aided in fixing a broken truss and installing a new overhead light with a fan in the barn.
Ryan discusses the unexpected issue of ice accumulation on the roof, a problem they hadn't anticipated after relocating from Wisconsin to Arkansas. This led to ice sheets forming and falling, potentially damaging the roof and causing leaks. He expresses frustration with the oversight by both himself and the contractors in preparing for this.
Throughout the video, Ryan reflects on the constant challenges of homesteading, ranging from equipment malfunctions to weather-related issues. Despite these setbacks, he remains determined to overcome these obstacles. Friends from Wisconsin visit to help with insulation and drywall, but their work is hampered by leaking caused by the melting ice.
Additionally, Ryan showcases their efforts in practicing radio communication using a shortwave radio, an important skill for emergency situations. This practice is particularly challenging due to solar flares causing interference. The video concludes with gratitude for the support they've received, including a 20ft ladder from Werner, and Ryan encourages viewers to like, share, and subscribe for more updates.
