Lochiel School House
Lochiel is a town on and split by the US/Mexico border. Not much is left, a few buildings, a church and the old school. The school was recently renovated and we were fortunate to get a look in side.

Introduction to Summits On The Air (SOTA).
I am repurposing a different video to use as a brief, not all inclusive video about summits on the air.
Summits on the air (SOTA) is a ham/amateur radio activity that combines hiking and radio in mountainous areas.
Most if not all forms of radio communication are allowed in SOTA.
For more information, see the links below.

Dragoon Spring and Mountain Hike.
Dragoon Spring is about a mile down a dirt road from the burial site of the Confederate soldiers and the Butterfield Overland Stage Stop.
There are some ruins and artifacts there. It looks like the remains of an old dam.
This is a very beautiful location and is a really nice place to hike. We decided to explore the spring and tackle a pretty rigorous climb. The Mrs. picked the route and it was very intense. I was so intense, that a couple of hunters, that happened to be in the area, watched our journey up and down and when we were done for the day, they stopped and gave up props for being able to do it. They were specifically impressed with the Mrs. and her goat like hiking skills.

Sunset Mill in Contention City Arizona Territory via the "ore" road.
We hiked the road that we believe was used to haul the ore from Tombstone to the mills in Contention City. I know Contention City had it's own mines, but I think ore was also brought in from Tombstone. The ore was dumped from wagons on the top of the mill and this old road goes to that spot.
We were hoping to find the Sunset Mill, the cemetery and some other ruins. We did find the mill and some other ruins (not all that we were looking for) but were unable to find the cemetery; I guess that's another trip.
I pieced together where the road was from looking at topo maps, how the ore was hauled, the old roads in the area and information on various websites.
I am almost 100% sure, that at least the last leg of this route is accurate as it ends right on the top of the mill. The first leg of the road was later used as the "Old Tombstone Highway" and I cannot verify that that route was the original route. No matter, it was still fun to hike the old road.
At the end of the video, I plot out the locations of the bridge ruins and speculate as to what they were, as well as a video of the entire route we took.

Rattlesnake Ranch Dragoon Arizona.
The "Rattlesnake Ranch" is a roadside attraction in Dragoon Arizona. The owner made his career developing current anti venom protocols. He has a love for snakes and is very interesting to talk to.
The ranch is donation based and is fun way to spend an hour or so if you are in the area. We encourage people to visit Dragoon Arizona as it is a beautiful location and one of our favorite southern Arizona stops.
About a mile further up the road from the Rattlesnake Ranch is the Amerind foundation. It's a research museum devoted to Native American studies and archaeology. A mile or so further east on I-10 is the "The Thing", another roadside attraction with a gift shop and museum.

Confederate graves and Butterfield Overland Stage Station.
In Dragoon Arizona (named after the 3rd Cavalry Dragoons, that battled the Chiricahua), there is an abandoned Butterfield Stage Station and six graves.
The station was used from September 1858 to March 1861 and other stage lines until 1880.
There are four Confederate graves north of the station, these were three Confederate Soldiers and a Mexican boy. The two graves to the west were three Butterfield's Overland Mail Company employees who were killed by their workers (two buried in a single grave), along with the amputated arm of massacre survivor Silas St. John, which is buried between the two graves.
We easily located the four Confederate graves as they are very well maintained and taken care of. We "happened" upon another grave, which was one of the Butterfield graves. According to the information, the two Butterfield graves were placed head to toe, so technically, we found all six.

Cochise County Mountain Hike (SOTA) Volume 03
This is a series of hiking videos where I also include some amateur radio.
If you like hiking up mountains and desert scenery, these should be some fun videos for you.
If you like amateur radio, portable and remote activating, summits on the air, parks on the air etc, these videos have that too.
If you like one but not the other, I put chapters in so you can skip the parts you don’t care about.
In This Video:
A quick video of a summit activation.
Not much of a hike, some Morse code contacts and finished.

Bear encounter? Mt Ballard Bisbee AZ
This is the fusion of two hikes on different days. We never made it to Fissure Peak, but did have a bear encounter on day two.
Yes, my wife wishes I would stop wearing that old sweatshirt, my late grandmother would be mortified, but that's one of the advantages of being a crusty old man: you stop caring about stuff like that.
Sorry for all the sniffling and snorting.

Sunnyside Arizona Ghost Town Part 01
This video is about Sunnyside Arizona, a ghost town near the Arizona/Mexico border.
In part 01 we walk through the remaining buildings.
Sunnyside Arizona was established by Samuel Donnelly in 1895. In was a communal/collective religious community that was supported by mining from the nearby Lonestar mine.
By 1903, all but one man had left the town.
In 1912, the town was revived as a ranching community and had a post office from 1914 to 1934, with the last resident leaving in 1941. The town remained empty until the 1960s when two descendants of the original group moved back and stayed until their deaths in the 1980s.
Out of respect, we asked for and received permission to visit, although the owner does not require it (at the moment). There is a guest book for everyone to sign. Please be respectful so that access isn't removed in the future.

The Grave of Johnny Ringo and Soldiers Hole
Soldiers Hole was a "rest" stop for soldiers and travelers in the old west. It was supposed to be a mill and mining town, it had homesteading, Apache incursions etc.
There is too much history for me to detail here, but the link below is pretty in depth.
https://www.cochisecountyhistoricalsociety.org/journals/cchs-story-of-soldiers-hole-october-2001.pdf
Johnny Ringo was a well known outlaw in the old west; known mostly (in my mind) for his encounters with Doc Holliday.
He was found dead at this site with a bullet in his temple. His death was ruled a suicide.
His grave in on private property, but the owner's allow people to visit.

Picacho Peak Hike Part 01
Picacho Peak is a (very) popular hiking/camping spot in southern Arizona. It is a difficult hike and if you are not in shape, and maybe if you are, it might be a challenge.
If you're like me and prefer not to be near a lot of people and want to enjoy nature in the quiet, this type of hiking spot might not be for you (notice the grumpiness in the video). Also, this hike has some very challenging areas, so if you have some type of health condition or you don't like hikes, same advice.
It was $7 to get in and the place was packed. It might not be as busy during the week. "If" we ever decide to do this again (the wife is already to go back), we will go during the week and hopefully it's not as busy.
In part 01, we do the climb up and summit.

Empire Ranch Part 01
This is the 15th video in our series about ghost towns and locations associated with Tombstone. If you follow the links below you will see that several of the characters known in Tombstone lore are connected in some way to the Empire Ranch and Total wreck.
The Empire ranch was established in the 1860s by Edward Nye Fish.
In 1876 it sold for $2000 to Walter Vail.
The ranch expanded over the next 20 years with railroads, ranching and mining. The "Total Wreck" mine was discovered and added to the expansion of the ranch.
In 1928, the Chiricahua Ranches Company, which was incorporated by three Boice brothers, purchased the ranch.
In 1969 the ranch was sold to Gulf American Corporation (GAC) which planned to build a large residential community development.
In 1974 Anamax Mining Company purchased the Empire Ranch from GAC for its water rights and mineral potential.
In 1988 a series of land exchanges put the property into public ownership under the administration of the Bureau of Land Management (BLM).
In 2000, the U.S. Congress officially designated these 42,000 acres to be Las Cienegas National Conservation Area (LCNCA).

We finally see an "actual" bear
In plenty of our videos you will see me talking about bears. We came close on one hike when we heard a bear off in the brush and saw a footprint.
This poor guy was hit by a car.
Even though this bear was intact etc, some people may not want to see this.
