#Russia #Ukraine #Kharkiv A Russian missile hit a food shop in the northeastern Ukrainian region of Kharkiv and killed at least 48 people, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said on the Telegram messaging app. The death toll was later increased to at least 50 people. "The brutal Russian crime of hitting an ordinary grocery store with a rocket is a completely deliberate terrorist attack," Zelensky added. It is one of the deadliest strikes in recent months that came as Zelenskyy attended a summit of European leaders in Spain to drum up support from the country's allies.

On Monday, Kyiv's defense ministry announced it had fully reclaimed the village of Robotyne. South of Robotyne lies the strategic city of Tokmak, a critical railroad junction for the Russian military. Ukraine has been pushing to reach the Sea of Azov, in a grinding effort to cut Russian forces in half and severe the land bridge to Crimea. But Kyiv's advances have been slow as they push through Russia's heavily fortified positions and vast minefields. Our special correspondent Aya Ibrahim is in Kyiv and tells us more. Greece's summer of wildfires shows no sign of abating. One fire near Alexandroupolis in the east has burned more than 700 square kilometers of land. This comes after President Vladimir Putin sent his condolences to his family, saying Prigozhin had made mistakes but achieved results. Russian authorities say the Wagner mercenary leader was listed as a passenger on a flight that crashed with no survivors. He had been one of Putin's most important allies - until June, when he led an armed rebellion against Moscow's military leadership. The United States says it will train Ukrainian pilots to fly F16 fighters, after European countries pledged to give Kyiv the jets. The Pentagon said that flight training would begin in the US state of Arizona in October. Denmark, the Netherlands, and Norway have all announced that they will provide Ukraine with the advanced US-made aircraft. Kyiv has long been seeking the jets to bolster its Soviet-era air force - but training will likely take several months. Russia's presence in the African continent heavily depends on the Wagner Group. But now, after the possible death of the head of the Wagner group, Yevgeny Prigozhin, there is uncertainty about the private military's role. Many African countries depend on Russia for economic aid. Russia exerts its influence also through military cooperation. This often involves the Wagner Group. The mercenary group has been active in countries like Mali, Sudan, Libya, and Central African Republic. Wagner is also accused of political interference in these countries.

#BRICS The BRICS group — Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa — on Thursday said it had invited six countries to join its ranks. The move is aimed at increasing the clout of a bloc that has pledged to champion the "Global South." The new countries invited are Argentina, Egypt, Iran, Ethiopia, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates (UAE)

#Pakistan #CableCar #Rescue Officials in Pakistan are praising locals for helping a daring rescue of people trapped in a dangling cable car. All eight, including six school children, were pulled from the gondola hundreds of meters over a remote valley. Local rescuers stepped in after the military was only able to save one person by helicopter. The rest were brought down by a zipline rigged by a local emergency team alongside the army, working through the night. The students were using the cable car to travel to school in the mountainous region. One of those rescued has been sharing his story.

The country's interior minister said the missile attack also wounded dozens when it hit the center of Chernihiv. People had been on their way to church to celebrate a religious holiday when the strike took place, the ministry said, adding 11 of the wounded were children. Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelenskyy condemned the strike, saying it hit a theater and a University. Zelenskyy is in Sweden for talks with Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson. It's the first time he has traveled to Sweden since Russia invaded Ukraine, but Sweden was one of the first countries to offer Ukraine weapons. And Russia's President Vladimir Putin has met his top generals in a rare trip to the southern military command in Rostov-on-Don. The Kremlin says Putin listened to briefings by the head of the armed forces.
