Today started with high hopes! Unfortunately, fate scheduled an appointment with an angry cager who ended my day and prematurely terminated the Hunter's road career. I have briefly recounted the incident below to give more closure. The entire accident video may be released later, depending on legal issues. Both rider and machine suffered a +25 MPH impact on the rear left while traveling at ~55 MPH. The Hunter and I both high-sided at full speed without warning, and I was thrown to the pavement to begin my painful slide on the concrete highway. I rolled 2-3 times before I could control my slide. On the final roll, I flattened out onto my stomach to prevent further injuries. My helmet's visor and outer shell took an extended beating, but they managed to stay intact. My riding jacket took a brutal grinding on Houston's concrete highway. The jackets' shoulders and elbows disintegrated, but they survived long enough to protect my skin from being erased on the speeding concrete. My riding gloves also took a beating but survived almost entirely intact. Both of my shoulders, hips, and left leg suffered deep tissue trauma and joint hyper-extensions from the initial impact and the subsequent tumble on the pavement. My left wrist suffered a deep abrasion when the left jacket arm retracted during the initial impact onto the pavement. Both knees suffered abrasions from the slide, but my left knee fared worse with deeper lacerations and impact trauma. My lower back and neck suffered the most significant injuries from the rapid twisting from the tumble on the pavement. However, I was able to w̶a̶l̶k̶ limp away from the accident thanks to my safety equipment! My crash helmet, riding jacket, gloves, and boots protected me from suffering more devastating injuries. I have always advocated for the ATGATT (All The Gear All The Time), or MOTGATT (Most of The Gear All The Time) riding philosophies. This incident provided HARSH (and thankful) proof that it works! This was my first significant motorcycle accident in 38+ years and 2M+ miles of riding on the streets. I've had numerous minor incidents over the decades, but never an injury that made me pause (or stop?) riding. Unfortunately, I won't be riding again for a while until I heal from my injuries and feel strong enough to ride again without complications. My Hunter 350 was totaled in an accident on October 18, 2033 ( https://youtu.be/ryELMtEel8g ). The repair estimate was over $6000, so the insurance company deemed it a total loss. I requested a buyback option to salvage a few items from it and potentially rebuild the bike if the frame isn't damaged. If it's rebuildable, then I might convert it into a scrambler or a tracker. Otherwise, I'll part it out and keep a few bits for my next Hunter 350 project. Welcome to a rainy Wednesday and my School of Hard Knocks! I took the Hunter for a work commute today in the rain to see how these CEAT tires behave on wet pavement. As soon as I left my neighborhood, the low fuel light started flashing... but I pushed my luck too far. Skip around with the chapter markers below. I planned to stop at a fuel station and try to pre-authorize the pump with Google Wallet or Samsung Pay on my phone, but I haven't tried that option before. Anyway... I pushed my luck just a bit too far and ran out of fuel on I-10 in the HOV lane... just 2 miles short of my exit! Luckily, it sputtered to a stop in the best possible (safest) location along the route. The wide shoulder in that portion of the Katy HOV lanes offered relative safety while I waited for a roadside rescue. My son rescued me with a NoSpill container containing 1 gallon of go-go juice, and I continued home after filling up at Wal-Mart. Lessons learned: - 1. The Hunter warned me with plenty of notice, and I rolled 46 miles into the "F-trip" meter on "reserve" - 2. Don't count on draining this tank's total of 3.4 gallons of fuel! - 3. The factory-claimed "dead stock" of 0.13 gallons (0.5L) isn't accurate because I refilled with exactly 3 gallons of fuel - 4. Fuel economy at refill was 84.3 MPG (253 miles, 3.0 gallons), so the maximum range is ~250 miles before pushing! - 5. Don't forget your wallet at home, doofus! One of the most common comments I receive on my motorcycle videos is, "Why are you riding with your high beams on?!" Well, here's the answer! Motorcycles have a smaller visual profile in traffic, and the headlight is typically not as bright as automotive equivalents. Using the high beam adds vital visibility in traffic so cagers can distinguish us from the rest of traffic. Auxiliary lighting, such as driving lights or fog lights, also aid in differentiating motorcycles from other vehicles. Anything that looks DIFFERENT or stands out is a Good Thing. Different countries have their own rules and regulations, but most states in the USA are very clear on the use of high beams during daylight hours. Motorcyclists are encouraged and trained to use their high beams for better conspicuity in traffic. This safety practice is taught in the Motorcycle Safety Foundation (MSF) rider's courses, and it is also listed in many states' motorcycle operator training manuals. I live in Texas, and these points have been in our motorcycle operator's manual for decades. I've practiced this life-saving trick for decades, riding all over the USA, and it has always been common sense for all riders I've known. His answer was simple: "That's so all these crazy 4-wheelers and big rigs can SEE us, and maybe we can make it home for dinner!"
