Ammon and his brothers were missionaries. Sometimes they were hungry and tired, but they kept teaching about Jesus. Ammon and his brothers went to a land far away to teach their enemies about Jesus. As an Apostle serving in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, President Dallin H. Oaks received the “unusual commission” to move to the Philippines and supervise the work there. President Oaks, now of the First Presidency, served as the Church’s Philippines Area president from 2002 to 2004. When President Oaks, with his wife, Sister Kristen M. Oaks, arrived in the Philippines he witnessed the Church’s amazing growth for himself. But the late President Gordon B. Alma was the prophet’s son. He was named for his father, but he didn’t believe what his father taught. He told people that the Church wasn’t true. One day, an angel appeared to Alma. The angel told Alma to repent. For three days, it was like Alma was asleep. He was thinking about his bad choices. Then Alma prayed to be forgiven. And he was! He felt Jesus Christ’s love. Finding Strength in Jesus Christ. President Dallin H. Oaks, a counselor in the First Presidency shares his testimony of the Savior's power to succor, to help, every mortal pain and affliction, because of His atoning experience in mortality. “He will take upon him the pains and the sicknesses of His people.” Mortality is filled with frequent struggles, heartaches, and suffering. We and those we love suffer sickness; the death of a loved one. We all experience failure in our personal responsibilities, the feeling of rejection, racial and ethnic prejudices, and unemployment or other reverses in our plans. Some are born with physical or mental disabilities. For many, the infirmity of depression. Another painful affliction is the circumstance of singleness. The Savior has the power to succor—to help—every mortal pain and affliction. Sometimes His power heals an infirmity. Sometimes He succors or helps by giving us the strength or patience to endure our infirmities. Because of His atoning experience in mortality, our Savior is able to comfort, heal, and strengthen all men and women everywhere, but I believe He does so only for those who seek Him and ask for His help. Our Savior has revealed that He “descended below all things”. He knows of our anguish, and He is there for us. Like the good Samaritan, when He finds us wounded at the wayside, He will bind up our wounds and care for us. Eyring, a counselor in the First Presidency shares his testimony and thoughts to help each of us find peace through Jesus' great sacrifice. “Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Fourth, keeping the Lord’s commandments requires more than obedience. We are to love God with all our heart, might, mind, and soul. Fifth, it is clear that the Lord loves us. Holland, a member of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles shares his testimony that because Jesus walked such a long, lonely path utterly alone, we do not have to do so. Now I speak very carefully, even reverently, of what may have been the most difficult moment in all of this solitary journey to Atonement. That concluding descent into the paralyzing despair of divine withdrawal when He cries in ultimate loneliness, “My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?” With all the conviction of my soul I testify that He did please His Father perfectly and that a perfect Father did not forsake His Son in that hour. Nevertheless, that the supreme sacrifice of His Son might be as complete as it was voluntary and solitary, the Father briefly withdrew from Jesus the comfort of His Spirit. It was required, indeed it was central to the significance of the Atonement, that this perfect Son who had never spoken ill nor done wrong nor touched an unclean thing had to know how the rest of humankind would feel when we did commit such sins. His Atonement to be infinite and eternal, He had to feel what it was like to die not only physically but spiritually. When the uttermost farthing had then been paid, then finally and mercifully, it was “finished.” Against all odds, Jesus of Nazareth, the living Son of the living God, restored physical life where death had held sway and brought joyful, spiritual redemption out of sin, hellish darkness, and despair. One of the great consolations of this Easter season is that because Jesus walked such a long, lonely path utterly alone, we do not have to do so. Because of God’s perfect love for us and the eternal sacrifice of Jesus Christ, our sins—both great and small—can be blotted out and remembered no more. The Savior’s infinite Atonement completely changes the way we may view our transgressions and imperfections. Instead of dwelling on them and feeling irredeemable or hopeless, we can learn from them and feel hopeful. Because of Jesus Christ, our failures do not have to define us. They can refine us. Like a musician rehearsing scales, we can see our missteps, flaws, and sins as opportunities for greater self-awareness, deeper and more honest love for others, and refinement through repentance. If we repent, mistakes do not disqualify us. They are part of our progress. We are all infants compared to the beings of glory and grandeur we are designed to become. No mortal being advances from crawling to walking to running without frequent stumbles, bumps, and bruises. That is how we learn. If we earnestly keep practicing, always striving to keep God’s commandments, and committing our efforts to repenting, enduring, and applying what we learn, line upon line, we will gather light into our souls. My beloved friends, your Heavenly Father loves you with a perfect love. He has proven His love in endless ways, but above all by giving His Only Begotten Son as a sacrifice. I extend to you my love and blessing at this joyful Easter season. Jesus Christ, because of His infinite and eternal sacrifice, has perfect empathy . Elder David A. Bednar, a member of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles shares his testimony of the empathy and mercy extended through His sacrifice. The Savior said: “Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light” Making and keeping sacred covenants yokes us to and with the Lord Jesus Christ. In essence, the Savior is beckoning us to rely upon and pull together with Him, even though our best efforts are not equal to and cannot be compared with His. As we trust in and pull our load with Him during the journey of mortality, truly His yoke is easy and His burden is light. We are not and never need be alone. We can press forward in our daily lives with heavenly help. Through the Savior’s Atonement we can receive capacity and “strength beyond [our] own” It is one thing to know that Jesus Christ came to the earth to die for us. But we also need to appreciate that the Lord desires, through His Atonement and by the power of the Holy Ghost, to enliven us. There is no physical pain, no spiritual wound, no anguish of soul or heartache, no infirmity or weakness you or I ever confront in mortality that the Savior did not experience first. In a moment of weakness we may cry out, “No one knows what it is like. No one understands.” But the Son of God perfectly knows and understands, for He has felt and borne our individual burdens. And because of His infinite and eternal sacrifice (see Alma 34:14), He has perfect empathy and can extend to us His arm of mercy and help us to do that which we could never do relying only upon our own power. Jesus Christ asks us to love one another. Elder Quentin L. Cook, a member of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles shares his testimony of Jesus Christ's administration of the last supper and the powerful principle taught at that event. The final two days of the Savior’s mortal ministry prior to His Crucifixion are profoundly important and in some ways beyond comprehension. He took bread, broke it, prayed over it, and passed it to His disciples, saying, “This is my body which is given for you: this do in remembrance of me.” The Savior subsequently accomplished the Atonement. He took upon Himself the “burden of the sins of mankind” and the “horrors that Satan … could inflict.” This ultimately culminated in Christ’s triumphant Resurrection on Easter Sunday. Christ fulfilled His sacred mission as Savior and Redeemer. As we ponder what it means to be Christians today, think about what our path of discipleship will require of us. The Savior’s charge to His disciples to love one another—and the dramatic and powerful way He taught this principle at the Last Supper—is one of the most poignant and beautiful episodes from the last days of His mortal life. He was not teaching a simple class in ethical behavior. This was the Son of God pleading with His Apostles and all disciples who would come after them to remember and follow this most central of His teachings. How we relate and interact with each other is a measure of our willingness to follow Jesus Christ. As His disciples, there will be times when we will be tried and persecuted unjustly and mocked unfairly and face temporal and spiritual storms of a magnitude that will seem unbearable to us and experience bitter cups that we pray would pass from us. No one is exempt from the storms of life. We rejoice in all the Savior has done for us. He has made it possible for each of us to gain our salvation and exaltation. I bear my apostolic witness that Jesus Christ lives and is the Savior and Redeemer of the world. He has provided the pathway to true happiness.
