George Washington and the Badge of Military Merit
It is August seventh, and on this date in 1782 America’s first official military decoration of the United States was created by a general order issued by the Commander in chief of the continental army. But the creation of the award was almost lost to time, very nearly, forgotten history.

Of the millions of men and women who served across the world during WWII, there are countless stories of people who went above and beyond in the face of great danger to serve their country, to save their comrades, and to bring an end to one of the most horrifying conflicts in human history. One of those men was Richard Ira Bong, a fighter pilot who served in the Pacific and was so successful at what he did that he became America’s “Ace of Aces” - the top flying ace of the US Army Air Force.

Good Morning, Captain

A Short History of Beekeeping
It’s certainly not forgotten history that bees play a vital role in the ecosystem and are a key to pollinating plants all over the world. Lesser known is the deep history between humans and bees that is perhaps as old as any relationship between humans and other species.
May 20th is World Bee Day, a day dedicated to acknowledging the role of bees and other pollinators in the global environment, and their importance to human agriculture. Learn more at un.org/en/observances/bee-day

The "Harrison Horror" of 1878
John Harrison, grandson of former president William Henry Harrison, went to the Medical College of Ohio searching for the body of a friend which had been stolen from its grave. What he found there shocked the nation, and drove a national discussion of the macabre practice of body snatching.

The Day Niagara Falls Ran Dry
The name Niagara Falls is derived from a native American word that means “a thundering noise.” You can imagine the surprise of area residents, therefore, when, just after midnight on March 30, 1848, the thunder suddenly stopped.

From Blimps to Microchips: Moffett Field
Silicon Valley is synonymous today with high-tech startups and technology, a center for computer research and big-name tech companies. But in the 1930s that reputation was just beginning to form when the city of Sunnyvale sold some land to the US government to establish an airbase, today known as Moffett Field. The history of that airfield and the work done there has done more than a little to earn Silicon Valley its name.

The 1925 US Fleet Visit to Australia
In 1925 the United States decided to send a significant naval fleet on a visit to Australia and New Zealand. The press emphasized goodwill, and events like sports contests between US sailors and local residents. But the voyage had much deeper, and more complex, diplomatic goals.

The Legend of Tarzan
The film Tarzan of the Apes was released 105 years ago in 1918. The film represented significant milestones in the film industry, and was emblematic of its times. What’s more, it represents the enduring popularity of a fiction icon that, some say, might actually have been based on a real person.

A Tale of Two Dakotas
Of all the obscure flyover states, perhaps none are more confusing to those who fly over than the place where I happened to spend my youth- the Dakotas. In fact, many American schoolchildren have pondered the question- Why are there two Dakotas? The answer to that question is a good illustration of the strange politics of the territorial history of the United States,.

Spacecraft on Wheels: NASA's LRV
While only four were built, the two seat, one horsepower electric roadster that the press dubbed “the moon buggy” was the most popular automotive model on the planetary body on which it was designed to drive and one that, those who drove it say, changed everything.

The M2-F1, NASA's "Flying Bathtub."
In its 64 years of existence, NASA has tested some truly innovative and inspiring ideas. None, perhaps, were more radically weird than the wingless “flying bathtub,” towed by a hopped up Pontiac Catalina. It was a little remembered low-budget program in a time when NASA and the entire idea of space travel was radically different than what we see today- a time when pure engineering enthusiasm could make a bathtub fly.

On today’s episode the History Guy tells two stories of the space race and Nasa’s efforts to better understand our solar system and the universe. First he tells the story of Pioneer 10, the first spacecraft to pass through the asteroid belt and the first human-made device sent to study the outer solar system up-close. Then he tells the remarkable story of Voyager 2, and the incredible journey it took to examine the furthest planets in our solar system.

The 1918 "Polar Bear" Expedition
Despite the distraction of the ongoing World War, troops from thirteen nations were involved in the Russian Civil War, fighting over a variety of goals and objectives. Among those was the United States, which had troops fighting in the bitter Russian cold even after the war in Europe came to an end.
