Watery output is heavy, causes leaks (super easy for thin output to sneak behind the wafer) and can be an indicator of infection, blockage, or other maladies - if nothing else - can cause dehydration. This is NOT a medical advice - I’m simply sharing what my experiences are. I recently had my first minor blockage - but major enough to recognize I might be in trouble. Thankfully, I was able to take the right steps quickly to avoid an ER visit. That video is in the works. But this one, is to show how we can thicken the output in our pouch. Sometimes, we just are kinda stuck with thin output. What can we do to make the bag contents a little thicker? I LOVE these sachets! Have you tried them? Let me know! We Got a Bidet! I wasn’t planning on it but hubs did not want to be in a position where he couldn’t reach up behind himself after having open heart surgery (they crack the chest and position the upper body in such a manner where reaching behind the body is painful at best). So, he felt a bidet would help. He loves it, I’m not a big fan of the style but I share how we managed a leaky bump in the bidet road, fixed it, and got it installed. Did I mention I’ve never done any “plumbing” before? 🤣 The rest of my thoughts - including pros & cons - are shared in the video too. In my watermelon short, I “talked” a little about how much I love it & the importance of fiber but how, as an ostomate, I need to be careful how much I eat. I found this pancake mix before, but this recipe is my fav so far! It’s tasty, filling, low-carb (I’m trying to limit my sugar intake), Pairing with “no sugar added” extras of syrup, cool whip and cinnamon & it’s like a dessert - but so appetite satisfying! I wasn’t hungry for several hours and I only had 2 pancakes! I even had enough for my hubs & I for breakfast the next day! Anytime I can thicken & slow my output (usually an ileostomate has watery output) without causing a blockage, I’m feeling a WIN! It’s a delicate balance, right? As an ostomate, in small amounts, watermelon has been kind to me but it is loaded with all kinds of healthy goodness - including fiber - as well as water - so a small portion can thicken output just enough to keep it from being too watery. My problem is, I LOVE the stuff! 🤦🏻‍♀️🤷🏻‍♀️😂 So - I have to limit my portions. Easier said than done! The white seeds don’t show up in my output and I take any black seeds out beforehand (how do they sneak those into “seedless” anyway? 🧐) So, do you risk watermelon with your ostomy? Colostomy or Ileostomy?

If you need resources to care for your dental health, contact dental schools, even local community colleges, or county resources. It’s so important as many health conditions can be affected in a risky manner when we don’t. One of those is heart conditions but really, any broken tooth or ignored cavity can lead to an abscess which can lead to some hospital time. Who wants that? Not me! Been there and done that too much. I love that they gave him this - some of the items I’ve never been given before but have added to my “must haves” on my “What to Bring to the Hospital” video. 💕👍🏻 Did someone here watch my video? 🤣 Of course, he didn’t bring the eye mask or earplugs as he said he didn’t need them but I always have them with me - even for napping in hospital parking lots 😊. I’m just excited to see someone else thinks of them for patients! 🙌🏻.

The great poop-OFF (the toilet bowl) experiment Ok - so maybe it’s not “great” but I did learn something 😎. **I found It funny AND Informative but maybe not everyone will feel the same. You’ll see some output. I blocked most of it without sacrificing the message. As an ostomate, we do have some sticky stool at times. Getting tired of cleaning the toilet every time you use the loo? I do! Seems a little bit of Pam Cooking Spray goes a long way 🙂. Thanks to Stacy for the spark of an Idea for this video! I was originally going to do this as a “vs” but…both worked! What I’m working on for my next video! (Sneak peek short) A closer look at some “must have kitchen aides” for finely chopping foods & making smoothies. When we are fresh out of surgery, even if we’ve been given the “go-ahead” to a full unrestricted diet, the United Ostomy Assoc of America suggests 4-6 weeks of a low residue diet. Blenders & food processors can really be helpful to get the nutrients we need, yet allowing our intestines to heal by not overly taxing them with a diet of foods that might cause a blockage to eat too soon. Even if we chew, chew, chew and chew some more! So why not make your own fruit & veggie juices or smoothies? 🙂 Although I’ve shown my smoothies videos already, I thought I’d give y’all a closer look at why these products are my favs!

It’s been a week… Our pupper is having digestive issues so I was up all night making a pot of food for her, hubs had been sick all week and has pneumonia (treating with asthma meds, antibiotics & equipment at home), ANNNNDDDDD…About to upload this week’s file BUT my editor seems to have corrupted it SO I’ll be starting over & upload it sometime this weekend. Like a Boss! Using a Public Restroom With an Ostomy | Prep and Go Out! As an ostomate, we do have to navigate the public bathroom experience if we want to get out of the house. Don't allow it to intimidate you - just be prepared and even if a leak happens and you can't wait until you get home to change your appliance, that's ok - if you have your supplies and a change of clothes always on hand (in your vehicle, in your desk at work, backpack at school), you can change it in a public restroom! **Please note, my country (United States) has many available options for restrooms, but even still, there are still too many "NO's" when it comes to using a toilet someone else owns (like a restaurant or retail store) so a movement to increase the number of available places for us to use. See "We Can't Wait" below. If you have been declared legally disabled, you are protected in this country by the ADA. Please become familiar with that too. https://www.ada.gov/cguide.htm If you must empty your pouch and there is no bathroom access (it does happen from time to time): No 1 - breathe. No 2 - find a rest stop type of area (when safe to do so). No 3 - using a 1-2 liter container, baby wipes & a bottled water will suffice & toilet dump it out when you find one or at home (I've done that a couple of times in my mini-van when I've had to). Preparing Home for Ostomy Surgery Recovery | Dealing With Mobility Issues Post Hospitalization In keeping with my aim to share my personal experience, strength, and hope, with the goal that someone else may find it helpful, this video is based on what I did prior to my surgery date, but is not an exhaustive list (I have more to share but will save for future video's since this is long enough LOL!), and I'm including additional info (other web & channel links etc...) for you in the details below. Before surgery: PART ONE - [ ] Pay bills in advance - [ ] Meal planning - [ ] Cleaning // laundry etc... - [ ] Pet care // feeding, walking, grooming etc... - [ ] Asking for help // friends, family, church, food banks, (dial 211 in the U.S.A.) - [ ] Hire a housekeeper for even one time - [ ] Delegate to your kids, family - [ ] Buy specific foods for YOU ahead of time - [ ] Order #ostomy samples & supplies in advance - [ ] Big 3 Manufacturers USA (Hollister, ConvaTec & Coloplast) - [ ] Organize or set aside a specific place where you’ll keep your supplies - so you know where they’ll be in case of leak & need for unplanned bag change After & recovering at home: PART TWO - [ ] May actually feel great & relief! - [ ] My surgery was a great success - [ ] My stoma woke up right away (faster than my leg!) - [ ] Rare complication with TAP block but excellent pain control - [ ] May take some time for energy to return - [ ] If mobility issues a bedside bowl, bottle water, baby wipes or even a camping / RV style porta potty next to the bed can help - [ ] For urinating and emptying / rinsing pouch - [ ] Use camping toilet paper or RV approved - [ ] Request a home health or #stoma nurse assistance in the beginning if not provided in hospital - [ ] The more you change your appliance the better you’ll get at it! - [ ] Just relax, breathe 🙂 - [ ] Strive for progress, not perfection Rest 💜 The Serenity Prayer (short version): God grant me the serenity, to accept the things I cannot change, courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference. It helped tremendously. I literally recorded on a tape recorder, my own voice playing positive messages to myself. I added some of my favorite worship music and prayers. I asked the OR staff to only speak positive words while I was "under".
