One of the most common pieces of advice given to golfers looking to shallow the club... Is to focus on your “weight shift”... You're told to feel your weight shift to your lead side... While feeling like your chest continues rotating AWAY from the target. Again, This Is What Actually Happens When You Shallow The Club... The number one thing I've found when it comes to shallowing, lag, or any move I've been working on , is to exaggerate. I've learned not to be afraid of going to extremes with it. At first, I was hesitant, thinking that if I exaggerated too much, it would be difficult to undo. But that's not what happens in reality. When you try to really exaggerate a movement, you actually end up getting just about the right amount of lag or whatever else you're working on. It might feel like you're doing something crazy and extreme, but when you see it on camera, it's usually just about right. And then, as you continue to practice, you might need to be aware of not exaggerating too much. But that's a good problem to have, in my opinion. I'd rather work back from having too much lag than having no lag at all. So I'm a big believer in exaggerating at the start to really get the hang of it. This is similar to what we talked about with variability training, where we intentionally go a bit too far one way and then work it back to the middle. It's not the end of the world if we get a little too much, because we can always tone it back. Another thing that's helped me mentally is to think of it like running an experiment. I don't have to make a perfect swing and hit every shot perfectly. Instead, I'm going to run an experiment to see how shallow I can get, for example. It's almost like a game, where I'm trying to push myself to see what I can do. And when you approach it that way, you'll find that even if you hit some bad shots, it's no big deal. It's just part of the experiment. And by running those experiments and trying to exaggerate, you'll end up getting closer to what you actually want! You want to feel like you start with a little bit more pressure on the inside of the right foot, I like to feel it on my toe right here, just on the inside of the toe. For me, I lift my left toe and get my weight bumping to the right before I even move the club. A lot of times players will set up with their weight on their lead foot and they'll wait until they're halfway in the backswing before it ever starts going to the right foot or starts shifting to the right. Today in my newly released video I will show you how you need to be thinking about your driver for consistently straight shots, and avoid the pitfalls I lived with for years. Full Video - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cCIpQdBCW0Y I didn't really figure this out until I was on the mini tours and I had always watched the players that were better than me and dominating with their driver. Back then, I didn't know nearly as much as I do about the swing now. I was always trying to figure out what was going on, I always set up with a little bit of a shut club face... so I always felt like I had to work a little bit to get the ball to draw. And I like to play a little bit of a draw and I'd have the club face closed, and I tried to hold that face square through contact. Now, at that point, I felt like my swing was held together with duct tape and shoestrings, like it was just gonna fall apart at any moment, and I could never get complete control of it. When I looked at those better players, instead of their face being a little closed, I started to notice their faces were open. Heck, one of the best players on this tour, won a boatload of money, seemed like he won everything. His face was around 15 degrees open. He's sitting the ball dead straight. And I'm thinking to myself, if my club face was 15 degrees open at address, I ain't gonna be able to keep this daggone thing on this planet. It feels like it's gonna slice off 30-40 yards to the right. I tried it. and what I realized is I was trying to control the club face too much. One helpful Trevino used to talk about to get that feeling of extension is to imagine that the ball sticks to the clubface and you're reaching way wide through the shot, with really long arms. But it's not just about the arms - you need to rotate your body and extend through the shot as well. To help with this, I like to teach my students the "pet the grass" feeling, where they brush the turf with their right hand and keep that feeling going down the target line all the way into their finish. You want to feel like the teeter totter goes to the right. Then you start your back swing.
