Episode 2471 - On this Friday's show Vinnie Tortorich welcomes Dr. Nadir Ali and they discuss a variety of upsides and downsides of GLP-1, autophagy, bingeing, seed oils, and more. Upsides and Downsides Dr. Nadir Ali has been keeping a streak of riding his bike to work. (3:30) He sees benefits through managing food addiction with streaks. (7:00) They discuss overdoing exercise, with no rest. Some people have a fear of not getting back into it if they miss a day. Dr Nadir has a general rule that streaks can be beneficial as long as its not at the detriment of something else. Vinnie asks Nadir's opinion about Allulose & GLP-1 agonists. (13:00) Naidir has a lot of clinical experience, so he sees things on a day-to-day basis. Yes, there are benefits for some people, but there are a lot of downsides, too. Vinnie challenges some aspects of using a GLP-1. (24:00) Nadir agrees that it’s only effective if a person does low-carb and intermittent fasting, (which is something Vinnie recommends without having to use the drug anyway.) (28:00) Additional Concerns There are upsides and downsides at certain levels of autophagy. (31:00) Too long of an extended fast can affect muscles. Vinnie asks Nadir about a low-carb, high fat being effective for weight loss and other metabolic issues. (36:00) There are instances where it may not be quite as effective. Are seed oils a detriment to health? They become a part of your cell membranes and do damage. (43:00) He gives an example of how it affects the retina. One single benefit you can do is to get seed oils out of your diet. Seed oils are ubiquitous in restaurants and included in most packaged foods. Binge eating - what can people do to help themselves? (53:00) Nadir has been looking into the pleasure centers of the brain in order to understand binge eating. Dopamine is the driver for the craving or behavior—but it doesn’t really have much to do with the pleasure. In fact, as dopamine goes up, pleasure can actually decrease. Coffee Talk and Sarcopenia Vinnie has always loved coffee and tried to learn what he could about it. (2:00) It’s an ergogenic aid, for one. Anna reads an article about coffee from "Medical News Today" about coffee as it relates to sarcopenia. (15:30) Vinnie clarifies what sarcopenia is and they discuss why it’s a problem. If you exercise your muscles, you are also strengthening your bones; that’s why weight-bearing exercise is great! Anna reads about how metabolism affects aging muscles. (29:00) There is no shortcut—proper nutrition and exercise are the best ways to combat sarcopenia. The study was done by the makers of Nescafé. Even though Vinnie has his own coffee company, he’s curious about certain aspects of the claims. Vinnie has had to address overtraining in recent consultations. (44:00) Some folks struggle with the idea of breaking a streak and not being able to start again. (10:00) Vinnie shares the advice he gave her. He recommends people find an accountability partner, if necessary. You need to keep working it, even if it gets difficult. He shares a story about “taking out the trash;” it’s a story of accountability. (18:00) They discuss mindset, what defines greatness, and the idea of getting past the idea of failure. (20:00) This reminds Vinnie of a documentary about Phil Health, a multiple Mr. Olympia winner, called "Breaking Olympia." (25:00) Vinnie talks about the documentary; as successful as Phil had been, he still doubted himself. Be aware of what you see on social media—you never truly know what people are going through. Sugars and Oxidative Stress More kids than ever are presenting with psychological problems. (2:00) Vinnie mentions Robyn Dobbins who openly shares how diet has improved her mental health symptoms. People are feeding their brains improperly. (4:30) There have been decades of misinformation, so treatment has been off. Everyone deserves the right information upfront rather than having to go through multiple medications. (7:00) Georgia goes through her personal history and how she stumbled onto dietary health changes. Vinnie asks her for more details on those changes. Sweeteners have a lot of side effects. (16:00) Sugar is the only addictive substance that society sanctions for children. (20:00) It is not only addictive, it is physically damaging to the brain. (24:00) It creates oxidative stress and insulin resistance. Refined flours do the same by causing a glycogen load; as a result, your insulin is up longer. (25:00) Most people are metabolically broken, so sugars and carbs are even more harmful. If your body “needs” sugar, your body will make it. Fats and protein are essential, but carbs are not. (31:00) The FDA recommends a bunch of nonsense. And now our gut health is a topic that needs to be paid attention to. Change for the Better Vinnie knows people whose adult kids are still having issues but refuse to believe that diet can help. Episode 2458 - On this Wednesday's show Vinnie Tortorich and Gina Grad discuss school lunches, how kids don't know to say no, hydration drinks, and more. They Don't Know to Say No Gina’s husband is obsessed with Vinnie’s UltraFats. (2:00) He uses them during all his training to fuel up, and so does Vinnie. If you have protein in your small intestine, your body will not catabolize muscle while training. (3:00) You don’t need to load up on carbs. Another great use is for travel! (5:00) Gina started making her child’s lunch because of all the processed foods that the school lunches contained. (9:00) Fois gras is banned in California because of the force-feeding of geese to make their livers fatty. Yet it is somehow acceptable to have school lunches be processed foods every day, which can lead to fatty liver, among other things. When a kid is hungry at school, they WILL eat what is in front of them, especially if it is chemically engineered to taste good. They don't know to say "no" to them! Vending machines in school became the topic of a South Park episode—about “Prime” beverage. (16:00) The episode is inappropriate for kids, but Gina wants parents to be aware of what is out there. President Bill Clinton was able to get soda out of vending machines at school. However, companies just filled them with juice and energy drinks instead. Vinnie shares a story about climbing with his nephews. (18:00) One nephew learned the hard way that maybe Vinnie was right about properly fueling your body. Gina shares the ingredients of the Prime hydration drink. (24:00) As you would guess, some of the ingredients are harmful, like cyanocobalamin. The kids are taken by the marketing. From canned beverages to packaged foods to what containers you use—it all adds up. It’s important to read the ingredients on food labels; Anna shares an example of a protein bar.
